IT for labs whose results have to hold up to auditors, regulators and clients

Environmental Testing Labs IT Services

An environmental lab sells defensible data, and that data is only as defensible as the systems that produced it: if instrument PCs get wiped, audit trails go missing or the LIMS is down during a holding-time window, samples get re-collected and clients start asking questions.

At a glance

Your work runs on GC-MS, ICP and other instruments driven by aging Windows PCs, a LIMS that tracks every sample from cooler receipt to final report, and electronic deliverables your clients submit to regulators.

We run IT and security for environmental testing labs, from single-site operations to multi-lab networks with service centers. We serve labs in Texas and nationwide.

IT that keeps holding times met, audit trails intact, reports defensible.

Isolated instrument PCs, protected raw data and a LIMS that's up when the coolers come through the door.

From cooler to certificate

Where an environmental lab's data can fail

Every result you report carries a chain: sample receipt, prep, instrument run, review, report and electronic deliverable. Assessors look at that chain during audits, and clients rely on it when their permit or remediation project is on the line. IT failures don't just slow the lab down. They can break the chain itself.

01 · The pressure

The clock starts the moment samples arrive

Coolers arrive from field crews with temperature logs and chain-of-custody forms, and some analytes have short holding times. Receiving staff log samples into the LIMS, analysts queue batches on instruments, and project managers chase turnaround commitments. Raw data, sequence files and audit trails pile up on instrument PCs. If the LIMS goes down or an instrument computer dies mid-batch, you risk blown holding times, re-sampling costs for clients, and findings at your next assessment.

  • Short holding times on volatile analytes
  • Raw data sitting on instrument PCs
  • Turnaround commitments clients plan around

02 · How it breaks

Old instrument PCs and shared analyst logins

Instrument computers often run an outdated Windows version because the instrument software was validated on it, and they sit on the same network as email and web browsing. Analysts share one Windows login per instrument, which weakens the audit trail assessors want to see. Raw data lives on local drives that nobody backs up. A ransomware infection from a phished project manager can spread to those PCs and encrypt years of raw data that your accreditation depends on.

  • Unsupported Windows on instrument computers
  • Shared logins that blur who ran what
  • Raw data on local drives with no backup

03 · What we change

Instrument isolation, named users, protected raw data

We put instrument PCs on a separate network segment with only the paths they need to the LIMS and data storage, and block internet access from them. We set up individual analyst accounts tied to your directory so audit trails show real names, and we work with instrument vendors before changing anything in their software. Raw data and CDS databases get copied automatically to protected storage with immutable, off-site backups. The LIMS server gets monitoring, patching and a tested restore.

  • Instrument PCs isolated and kept off the internet
  • Named analyst accounts for clean audit trails
  • Automatic, immutable backups of raw data

04 · The after

Audits go faster and data stays defensible

When an assessor asks how you protect raw data and audit trails, you show the segmentation, the account list and the backup test records. When an instrument PC dies, you rebuild it and restore the data instead of explaining a gap. Project managers stop worrying that a LIMS outage will blow a holding time. Clients who submit your data to regulators get deliverables backed by systems you can describe and prove.

  • Evidence ready for TNI and ISO 17025 assessors
  • Instrument failures recovered without data loss
  • Clients confident in your electronic deliverables

What We Offer

Comprehensive solutions tailored for Houston-area businesses

Instrument PC Isolation

Instrument computers often can't be upgraded without revalidating the software. We put them on a dedicated network segment, block internet and email access, allow only the connections they need to the LIMS and storage, and apply security updates the instrument vendor approves. Changes inside the instrument software stay with the vendor; we keep the PC and network safe around it.

LIMS Uptime and Performance

Your LIMS is the system of record for every sample. We monitor its servers and database, keep them patched on a schedule that avoids busy receiving windows, size storage ahead of growth, and work with your LIMS vendor on upgrades. A tested restore procedure means a failed server is a recovery, not a crisis.

Raw Data and Audit Trail Protection

Raw data files, sequence logs and chromatography data system databases get copied automatically from instrument PCs to protected central storage. From there they go to immutable, off-site backups that ransomware can't alter. We also keep file permissions tight so data can't be quietly edited or deleted outside the CDS audit trail.

Named Analyst Accounts

Shared instrument logins undermine data integrity. We set up individual accounts tied to your directory, with sign-in fast enough for analysts moving between instruments, and help configure your CDS and LIMS to use them. Audit trails then show who prepped, ran and reviewed each batch.

Electronic Deliverable and Portal Security

Clients and regulators receive EDDs, PDF reports and portal access from you. We secure the accounts that produce and send them with MFA, protect your client portal, and support the identity and signing requirements that come with electronic reporting to EPA systems under CROMERR, working with whoever administers your submission accounts.

Multi-Site and Service Center Networking

Labs with satellite service centers and courier routes need sample login, LIMS access and reporting to work the same everywhere. We connect sites securely, standardize workstation builds, and give field and courier staff managed mobile devices for chain-of-custody capture. Couriers scan custody forms on a phone, and the record lands in the LIMS before the cooler reaches receiving.

Fewer Assessment Findings on IT

Data integrity questions are a regular part of TNI and ISO 17025 assessments. Named accounts, protected raw data, documented backups and restore tests give your quality manager clear answers and evidence, instead of scrambling to explain how instrument data is handled.

Raw Data That Survives a Failure

Instrument PCs fail, and ransomware spreads. With raw data copied centrally and backed up immutably, losing a computer doesn't mean losing the results behind reports you've already issued, which protects you if a client or regulator questions old data.

Holding Times Protected From IT Outages

A monitored, patched LIMS and a documented downtime procedure keep sample receipt and batching moving. When the system is up, analysts work instead of waiting, and short-hold analytes get run on time. Nobody re-requests samples from a client because a server was down on receiving day.

Stronger Footing With Clients

Engineering firms and industrial clients increasingly send security questionnaires with their lab contracts. We keep your controls and test results documented, so you can answer those questionnaires accurately and win work that depends on them.

Our Process

1
We follow a sample from cooler receipt through prep, instrument run, review and report, noting each system, account and data location involved.
2
We inventory instrument PCs, operating system versions, CDS and LIMS servers, shared logins and backup coverage, ranking gaps by data-integrity risk.
3
We segment instrument computers with the instrument vendors' input, scheduling changes around batches so no run is interrupted.
4
We set up named analyst accounts, centralized raw data copies and immutable off-site backups, then test a restore your quality manager can witness.
5
We support the lab during business hours with after-hours emergency response for active incidents, plus monitoring and approved patching for servers and workstations.
6
We review accounts, backups and changes with your quality manager on a regular schedule and keep documentation current for assessments.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our instrument PCs run old Windows versions. Do we have to replace them?▼
Not necessarily. Many instrument software packages are only supported on specific Windows versions, and upgrading can mean revalidation. Where replacement isn't practical, we isolate those PCs: a separate network segment, no internet or email, only the connections they need to the LIMS and storage, and strict control of USB drives. We also back up their raw data centrally so a failure doesn't lose anything. When the instrument vendor releases a supported upgrade path, we plan it with your quality team so it fits your validation process.
How do you help with data integrity for our accreditation?▼
Accreditation bodies expect you to show that data can't be altered without a trace and that you can recover it. We support that with individual analyst accounts, file permissions that keep raw data from being changed outside the CDS, automatic central copies, immutable backups and documented restore tests. We also keep records of system changes. Your quality manual and procedures stay yours, and your quality manager decides how controls map to your accreditation requirements. We provide the technical setup and the evidence to back it up.
Will you change settings in our chromatography data system or LIMS?▼
We handle infrastructure and identity for those systems: servers, databases, storage, backups, network access and directory accounts. Application configuration, like audit trail settings, review workflows and calculations, belongs to your quality team and the software vendor. When a change involves both sides, such as connecting the CDS to directory sign-in, we plan it together with the vendor and your quality manager, test it, and document what changed. That keeps responsibility clear and avoids surprises during an assessment.
What does CROMERR mean for our IT?▼
CROMERR is EPA's rule for electronic reporting to EPA and authorized state programs. It focuses on how electronic signatures and submissions are handled by the receiving system. If your lab or your clients submit data electronically, the people signing need secure credentials, and the data sent needs to match what the lab produced. We help on the IT side by protecting those accounts with MFA, securing the workstations used for submission, and keeping records of what was sent. Your clients or the program administrator determine the specific signing requirements.
How do you schedule work without interrupting batches?▼
We build a maintenance calendar with your lab manager around sample receipt peaks and long instrument runs. Patching and network changes happen in agreed windows, and instrument PCs are only touched when no batch is running. Changes are staged: one instrument or one segment first, then the rest after it's confirmed working. Emergency security fixes still get coordinated with the lab before we act unless there's an active incident. You always know what's changing and when.
Can you protect our client portal and emailed reports?▼
Yes. Client portals and emailed reports are a common target because they carry your letterhead and clients trust them. We secure the accounts that publish reports with MFA, review portal access so former client contacts are removed, and set up email authentication so attackers can't easily spoof your domain. We also flag lookalike domains used in phishing that imitates your reports. If clients download EDDs from your portal, we make sure access is logged so you can show who retrieved what.
Do you provide Environmental Testing Labs IT Services in Houston and nearby areas?▼
Yes. LayerLogix is based in the Greater Houston area and delivers environmental testing labs IT services to businesses across Houston and the surrounding communities, including The Woodlands, Spring, Katy, Sugar Land, Conroe, Cypress, and Pearland.
