Defederation, done in the right order

Move Your Microsoft 365 Off GoDaddy, Without Losing Mail or Sign-In

Microsoft 365 bought through GoDaddy works until you need to run it properly: admin access, conditional access, your own licensing, an insurance questionnaire. Moving it into a tenant you control usually leaves every mailbox exactly where it is. What changes is who administers the tenant and how people sign in, and the order of those steps decides whether the move is invisible or a lost Monday.

What We Offer

Comprehensive solutions tailored for Houston-area businesses

Why Businesses Move It

Microsoft 365 bought through GoDaddy runs in a tenant GoDaddy administers. Day to day, mail works. The friction shows up when you try to run the business properly: limited access to the Microsoft 365 admin and security centers, no straightforward way to turn on conditional access or device management, licenses you can only buy from GoDaddy, and a sign-in page that belongs to GoDaddy rather than Microsoft. Cyber insurance questionnaires that ask about MFA enforcement and admin controls are often what forces the question.

Your Mail Usually Stays Where It Is

GoDaddy's Microsoft 365 mailboxes already live in Exchange Online. Defederation changes who administers the tenant and how people sign in; it does not copy mailboxes anywhere. Addresses, folders, calendars and OneDrive files stay put, and your MX records normally don't change. That is why, done in the right order, most staff notice a new password and an MFA prompt rather than a migration.

Sign-In Moves From GoDaddy to Microsoft

In a GoDaddy tenant your domain is federated: sign-in is handed to GoDaddy. Defederation converts the domain to managed authentication in Microsoft Entra ID, so people sign in with Microsoft directly. Passwords set through GoDaddy do not carry across, so every user sets a new one, and MFA is registered fresh. We schedule that moment and prepare the instructions so it isn't a Monday-morning surprise.

Licenses Switched Before Anything Is Cancelled

The order that matters most: replacement Microsoft 365 licenses are bought and assigned to every user before the GoDaddy subscription is cancelled. Cancelling GoDaddy first can disable the very accounts you are trying to keep. Once the new licenses are active and every mailbox is confirmed working, the GoDaddy plan is cancelled and GoDaddy's admin and partner access is removed from the tenant.

Security You Can Finally Turn On

With the tenant under your control we set up what a GoDaddy tenant made awkward: conditional access, enforced MFA, admin roles that aren't shared, device management, mailbox auditing, and email authentication with SPF, DKIM and DMARC published for your domain. Those are the controls insurers and auditors ask about, and now you can show them.

When a Fresh Tenant Is the Better Answer

Sometimes moving into a new tenant beats defederating the old one: the GoDaddy tenant has years of messy configuration, the business is merging with another company, or the admin access needed for defederation can't be obtained. A tenant-to-tenant migration copies mailboxes and OneDrive into a clean tenant and then cuts the domain over. It is more work, and we'll tell you after the assessment which path fits.

GoDaddy Professional Email Is a Different Job

GoDaddy also sells Professional Email (sometimes called Workspace Email), which is not Microsoft 365. Moving off it is a true mailbox migration: data is copied over IMAP into Microsoft 365 or Google Workspace, MX records change, and phones are re-set-up. The method, cutover planning and verification on our email migration page apply in full.

Your Domain Can Stay at GoDaddy

Moving Microsoft 365 away from GoDaddy doesn't mean moving your domain registration or DNS. Plenty of businesses keep the domain at GoDaddy and only move the email tenant. If you'd rather consolidate the domain elsewhere, that's a separate, low-risk step we can schedule after the mail is settled.

Why Choose LayerLogix?

Serving businesses throughout the Greater Houston area including Houston, The Woodlands, Conroe, Katy, Sugar Land, Spring.

The Right Order, Written Down

A dated runbook: admin access, license purchase and assignment, domain conversion, password and MFA reset, verification, and only then cancellation. Nothing irreversible happens before the step that protects it.

A Scheduled Password Moment

The sign-in change is planned for a quiet window, with plain-English instructions in staff hands beforehand and the help desk ready for Monday.

Verified, Then Cancelled

Every mailbox and OneDrive is checked under the new licenses before the GoDaddy plan is touched, so cancellation is a formality rather than a gamble.

A Tenant You Actually Own

Global admin credentials stored safely with you, GoDaddy partner access removed, and admin roles assigned to named people instead of one shared login.

Security Baseline Included

Conditional access, enforced MFA, mailbox auditing and DMARC are part of the move, not an upsell after it.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I move my Microsoft 365 email away from GoDaddy?▼
For Microsoft 365 bought through GoDaddy, the usual path is defederation: get full admin access to the tenant, buy and assign replacement Microsoft 365 licenses, convert your domain from GoDaddy-federated sign-in to Microsoft-managed sign-in, have users set new passwords and register MFA, confirm everything works, and only then cancel the GoDaddy plan and remove GoDaddy access. The mailboxes stay in Exchange Online throughout. The alternative, a tenant-to-tenant migration into a new tenant, copies the data instead and suits messier situations.
Will I lose any email when I leave GoDaddy?▼
The risk is in the ordering, not the transfer. In a defederation the mailboxes stay where they are; what can disable accounts is cancelling the GoDaddy subscription before replacement licenses are assigned. We confirm every mailbox under the new licenses before anything is cancelled, and in a tenant-to-tenant move we reconcile item counts per mailbox before the old tenant is retired.
Does GoDaddy email come with Microsoft 365?▼
It depends on the product. GoDaddy has sold Microsoft 365 plans, which run on Microsoft Exchange Online in a GoDaddy-administered tenant, and its own Professional Email, which is not Microsoft 365. The difference matters: moving Microsoft 365 off GoDaddy is mainly an administration and sign-in change, while moving off Professional Email is a full mailbox migration. If you are not sure which you have, the sign-in page and your GoDaddy product list usually tell you, and we confirm it during the assessment.
Do we have to change our passwords?▼
Yes. While the domain is federated, passwords are checked by GoDaddy. After conversion, Microsoft checks them, and the old GoDaddy-held passwords do not come across. Each person sets a new password and registers MFA in a scheduled window. We send instructions beforehand and the help desk covers the morning after, so it is a few minutes per person rather than a lost day.
Can we keep our domain at GoDaddy?▼
Yes. Domain registration and DNS hosting are separate from the Microsoft 365 tenant. Many businesses leave the domain at GoDaddy and only move the email tenant. Your MX records already point at Microsoft and normally stay as they are; we add or correct the records Microsoft 365 needs for authentication, such as SPF, DKIM and DMARC.
How long does it take?▼
The assessment and license setup take the longest; the conversion itself is a short, scheduled change, usually done outside business hours. Getting full admin access to a GoDaddy tenant can add time, so we start that request on day one. A tenant-to-tenant migration takes longer because data is copied and verified. You get a dated plan after the assessment rather than a guess before it.
What does it cost?▼
It depends on user count, shared mailboxes, devices, whether you defederate in place or move to a new tenant, and how much security work is included. You will also be buying Microsoft 365 licenses directly or through a partner instead of through GoDaddy. We quote a fixed project price after a short assessment, and we keep it separate from your ongoing license cost so you can see both clearly.
Why not just stay with GoDaddy?▼
If your mail works and nobody needs more control, staying can be reasonable. Businesses usually move when they need admin access GoDaddy limits, want to enforce conditional access and MFA properly, have to answer an insurance or compliance questionnaire, want to choose their own license mix, or want a managed IT provider to run the tenant without going through GoDaddy. We will tell you plainly if the move is not worth it for your size.
