Resident Wi-Fi, med passes and emergency calls on one well-run network

Assisted Living Communities IT Services

An assisted living community is part home and part care setting, so its network has to stream a resident's TV, carry emergency call alerts and support a med pass on schedule, all at the same time.

At a glance

Med techs document in ALIS, Yardi, PointClickCare or ECP, families expect portal updates and video calls, and the sales team tracks tours and move-ins in a CRM.

We design and secure the community network so resident, staff and life-safety traffic stay separate, support the eMAR carts and nurse stations, protect the accounts that handle resident billing, and coordinate with your call-system vendor.

Communities and multi-site operators in Texas and nationwide get U.S.-based engineering, plus local hands for on-site work.

IT that keeps med passes on time, residents connected, families in touch.

Networks, eMAR support and security for assisted living and memory care communities that are also residents' homes.

Home and care setting

One building, three networks that must never mix

Assisted living blends hospitality, healthcare and housing under one roof. Residents want streaming and video calls in their apartments. Staff need reliable eMAR and charting on every hall. Emergency call and wander systems need to work every second. Here's what that depends on, how it breaks, and how we keep it all straight.

01 · The pressure

Med passes, call pendants and resident streaming

Med techs push carts down each hall several times a day, scanning and documenting every dose in the eMAR. Residents press pendants that route alerts to caregivers' phones or pagers. Memory care doors and wander systems depend on the network behaving. Meanwhile residents expect reliable Wi-Fi for TV, telehealth and calls with grandchildren. When the network struggles, doses get documented late, alerts lag and families call the director to complain.

  • eMAR documentation at every med pass
  • Emergency call alerts to caregiver devices
  • Resident Wi-Fi for streaming and video calls

02 · How it breaks

Everything on one flat network and one password

Many communities grew their network one apartment wing at a time, so residents, staff, the call system and the front office share the same Wi-Fi and the same password taped behind the desk. A resident's infected laptop can reach the business office. Caregivers share eMAR logins at shift change. A business office manager gets a convincing email changing a vendor's bank details. And the call system vendor's remote connection was never documented.

  • Residents and staff on the same Wi-Fi
  • Shared eMAR logins at shift change
  • Vendor bank-change fraud in the business office

03 · What we change

Separate networks and named caregiver logins

We redesign the network so resident Wi-Fi, staff devices, life-safety systems and the business office each have their own segment, with coverage planned apartment by apartment. Caregivers get named logins or badge access on eMAR carts. Your call-system and wander-management vendors connect through documented, approved remote access, and we coordinate with them on anything inside their equipment. Business office mailboxes get MFA, and payment changes require a callback.

  • Segmented resident, staff and life-safety networks
  • Named caregiver access on eMAR carts
  • Documented vendor access for call systems

04 · The after

Residents stream, staff chart, alerts arrive

Residents get Wi-Fi that works in their apartments, and their devices can't touch your care systems. Med passes are documented as they happen. Alerts reach caregivers without the network being a question mark. When a state surveyor asks about medication documentation, or an insurer asks about network separation and MFA, you can show them. And when families ask whether Mom's information is safe, the director has a real answer.

  • Resident devices kept away from care systems
  • Medication records documented in real time
  • Clear answers for surveyors, insurers and families

What We Offer

Comprehensive solutions tailored for Houston-area businesses

Community Network Design

We plan wireless coverage apartment by apartment and hall by hall, then separate resident, staff, life-safety and business traffic onto their own segments. Residents get reliable streaming and video calls, and their devices never share a network with eMAR carts, the call system or the business office.

eMAR and Charting Support

Med carts, tablets and nurse station computers running ALIS, Yardi, PointClickCare or ECP need to work at every pass. We support the hardware, Wi-Fi roaming and accounts, set up named or badge-based caregiver logins, and coordinate with the software vendor on application issues so med techs aren't stuck mid-pass.

Emergency Call System Coordination

Pendants, pull cords and wander-management systems depend on the network and on vendor configuration. We secure and monitor the network segment they use, document vendor remote access, and coordinate with the call-system provider for any change inside their equipment. We don't modify life-safety devices ourselves.

Business Office Security

Resident billing, move-in agreements and vendor payments run through the business office. We protect mailboxes with MFA, filter impersonation and lookalike domains, and set a callback rule for any payment or banking change, which stops the vendor-fraud emails that target senior living business offices. Move-in paperwork with financial details gets stored in managed systems, not inboxes.

Family Portal and Video Calls

Families expect portal updates, photos and video calls with residents. We secure the accounts used for family engagement platforms, set up reliable video calling stations or tablets for residents who need help, and keep family communication tools away from clinical systems. Activity staff posting photos get clear rules on what can be shared.

Multi-Community Standards

Operators with several communities need each one built the same way. We create a standard for networks, devices, accounts and vendor access, roll it out community by community, and give regional leaders a single view of risks and open issues across the portfolio. Newly acquired communities follow the same path.

Why Choose LayerLogix?

Serving businesses throughout the Greater Houston area including Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Atlanta, Nationwide.

Happier Residents and Families

Reliable apartment Wi-Fi and easy video calls are part of the resident experience families judge you on. Fewer connectivity complaints means fewer calls to the executive director and better reviews from the people choosing a community for a parent.

Med Passes Documented On Time

Strong coverage in every hall and named eMAR logins let med techs scan and document each dose at the cart. That supports accurate records for state surveys and reduces the late entries that happen when a cart drops off Wi-Fi.

Care Systems Kept Apart

Segmented networks mean a resident's infected laptop or a guest's phone can't reach eMAR carts, call systems or the business office. One compromised device stays a small problem instead of becoming a community-wide incident that interrupts care.

Stronger Insurance Answers

Cyber insurers ask about MFA, network segmentation, backups and vendor access. You can answer with documented configuration rather than hopeful guesses, which makes renewals smoother and avoids surprises if you ever need to make a claim.

Our Process

1
We walk the community, mapping Wi-Fi coverage in apartments and halls and identifying every system on the network, including call and wander systems.
2
We document vendor remote access, shared passwords and accounts, and flag places where resident and care traffic mix.
3
We fix urgent risks first: MFA in the business office, shared eMAR logins and resident devices on staff networks.
4
We redesign and segment the network, coordinating with your call-system vendor so life-safety traffic is protected during the change.
5
We bring devices, monitoring, backups and endpoint detection under management and set a standard for eMAR carts and nurse stations.
6
We review Wi-Fi coverage, incidents, survey findings, vendor changes and expansion plans with your leadership team every quarter.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should residents and staff share the same Wi-Fi?▼
No. Residents' laptops, tablets and smart TVs are personal devices you can't manage, and some will be infected or out of date. If they share a network with eMAR carts, the call system or the business office, one compromised device can reach systems that matter for care and billing. We create separate networks for residents, staff, life-safety systems and guests, each with its own rules. Residents still get great coverage in their apartments, just on a network that can't touch your operations.
Can you work on our emergency call or wander-management system?▼
We work on the network it uses and coordinate with the vendor for everything else. Call systems and wander management are life-safety equipment, so configuration changes inside them belong with the manufacturer or authorized dealer. We secure and monitor the network segment, document how the vendor connects remotely, and make sure network changes are planned with them so alerts keep flowing. If an alert problem looks network-related, we troubleshoot that side and hand clear findings to the vendor.
Does HIPAA apply to assisted living communities?▼
It depends on the community. HIPAA applies to covered entities, typically providers that bill health insurance electronically for care. Some assisted living communities are covered entities and many aren't, though state licensing rules usually impose their own resident privacy and records requirements either way. Your counsel should make that determination. Regardless, resident health information, medication records and financial details deserve strong protection, and the controls we put in place make sense under any of those answers.
Our med techs share one eMAR login. How do we fix that?▼
Shared logins make it impossible to know who documented a dose, which matters during surveys and investigations. Most eMAR systems support individual accounts and many support quick sign-in methods like badges or PINs on the cart. We help you set that up so logging in takes seconds rather than minutes, which is the main reason staff share accounts in the first place. We also make sure carts lock automatically when unattended and that departing staff lose access right away.
How do you support communities spread across several locations?▼
With one standard applied everywhere. Each community gets the same network design, device setup, account structure and vendor access rules, adjusted for its building. Monitoring and endpoint detection report to one view, so regional leaders see issues across the portfolio. Remote support handles most problems, and for hands-on work we send local help near our offices or direct a vetted technician on-site. Acquired communities get brought onto the standard on a planned timeline.
What happens to our records if the internet goes down?▼
That depends on your eMAR and how it handles offline mode, so we plan for it in advance. Options include backup internet connections, cellular failover for critical systems, printed medication administration records generated on a schedule, and documented downtime procedures for med techs. We help set up and test the technical side. Your director of nursing or wellness director decides the clinical procedure, and we make sure the technology supports it when the connection drops.

LayerLogix is based in the Greater Houston area and delivers assisted living communities IT services to businesses across Houston and the surrounding communities, including The Woodlands, Spring, Katy, Sugar Land, Conroe, Cypress, and Pearland. Call 713-571-2390 to check coverage for your specific address.
What does Assisted Living Communities IT Services cost for a Houston business?▼
Pricing depends on your size and what you need, so we do not publish a one-size-fits-all number — but Houston businesses generally pay a flat, predictable monthly fee rather than surprise hourly bills. We start with a free, no-obligation assessment of your current setup, then give you a clear quote in plain English with no hidden costs. That way you know exactly what you are getting and what it costs before you commit.
