At a glance

Electric cooperatives run on a customer information and billing system, an outage management system fed by AMI and member calls, GIS maps of every pole and span, and a fleet of trucks with tablets.

We support co-ops as an extension of their in-house IT staff or as the whole department, protecting member data and payment channels, keeping the OMS and member portal available, and hardening the office network.

We secure the IT side and the boundary to SCADA and substation systems, and coordinate with your system engineers and vendors for anything inside them.

IT that keeps members billed right, outages mapped, crews connected.

Member data, billing, outage management and lineworker devices protected for cooperatives that answer to the people they serve.

Electric cooperatives

Member-owned, storm-tested, attacker-targeted

A cooperative is a utility, a billing company, a call center and a fleet operator, usually run by a small staff that knows every member by name. Its IT team, if it has one, is often one or two people covering everything. Here's what that load looks like, where it cracks, and how we help carry it.

01 · The pressure

Members, meters and storms on the same network

Every billing cycle, the CIS pulls meter reads from AMI, calculates thousands of bills and posts payments from the member portal, the phone line and the drop box. When weather rolls in, outage calls pile up, the OMS predicts which device opened, and dispatchers send crews whose tablets show GIS maps. Board members expect timely reports and a clean annual meeting. Lose the CIS and bills go out late. Lose the OMS during a storm and restoration slows for everybody.

  • CIS billing cycles fed by AMI meter reads
  • Outage management during severe weather
  • Crew tablets showing GIS maps in the field

02 · How it breaks

Small staff, wide reach, plenty of doors

Co-op incidents often start with a member services rep opening a fake past-due notice or shipping invoice. A vendor's remote support tool stays installed on the CIS server long after the last ticket. Lineworker tablets go years without updates. A shared engineering login reaches both the office network and a substation workstation. And a convincing email that looks like it came from your generation and transmission provider asks finance to update the bank account for the next power bill.

  • Phished member services mailboxes
  • Forgotten vendor remote tools on billing servers
  • Fake bank changes for wholesale power bills

03 · What we change

Segmented networks and named, watched access

We put MFA on Microsoft 365, VPN and every vendor connection, and route vendor support through a brokered, logged session instead of always-on tools. The office network gets segmented from AMI head-end, SCADA and substation systems, with the IT-side firewall rules documented alongside your engineers. Lineworker tablets and laptops enroll in device management. We back up the CIS, OMS and GIS data to immutable storage and test restores, and finance adopts call-back verification for wholesale power and vendor payments.

  • Brokered, logged vendor support sessions
  • Office network segmented from operations
  • Immutable CIS, OMS and GIS backups

04 · The after

A co-op the board and members can trust

Bills go out on schedule, and if a server fails, there's a tested restore instead of a guess. During a storm the OMS and member portal stay reachable and crews get their maps. Your general manager can show the board a clear picture of cyber risk and what's been done about it. When your insurer, your statewide association or a federal grant program asks how you protect member data and operations, the answers and evidence are already written down.

  • Billing cycles with tested recovery behind them
  • Clear cyber risk reporting for the board
  • Evidence ready for insurers and grant reviews

What We Offer

Comprehensive solutions tailored for Houston-area businesses

CIS and Billing System Support

Your customer information system holds member names, addresses, payment details and usage history. We maintain the servers or cloud connections around NISC iVUE and similar platforms, coordinate patching with the vendor, review user access each quarter, and back up databases to immutable storage with restore tests timed around billing cycles so recovery is proven before you need it.

Outage Management Availability

The OMS has to stay up on the worst night of the year. We monitor the servers, integrations and network links that feed it from AMI, IVR and member calls, plan maintenance away from storm season peaks, and keep a documented failover and recovery plan that your dispatchers have actually walked through.

Network Segmentation From Operations

AMI head-end systems, SCADA and substation equipment should never sit on the same flat network as member services desktops. We design and document the IT-side segmentation and firewall rules with your system engineers, restrict who crosses the boundary, and log those connections. Anything inside SCADA or protection systems stays with your engineers and their vendors.

Lineworker and Field Device Management

Truck tablets, rugged laptops and phones carry GIS maps, work orders and staking tools into the field. We enroll them in device management with encryption, automatic updates and remote wipe, push the apps crews need, and make sure a device left at a job site or damaged in a storm can be replaced and restored quickly.

Member Payment Channel Security

Members pay through SmartHub-style portals, IVR phone payments, walk-in counters and drop boxes. We help scope those channels for PCI DSS 4.0, segment payment workstations, keep card terminals and portal integrations patched, and train member services staff to spot social engineering calls aimed at account changes or payment details.

Co-Managed IT for Small IT Teams

Many co-ops have one or two IT staff who also handle phones, copiers and the boardroom projector. We take on security monitoring, patching, backups, help desk overflow and documentation, while your team keeps ownership of local relationships and operational systems. Managed detection and response adds 24/7 SOC monitoring so suspicious activity at 2 a.m. doesn't wait until morning.

Serving businesses throughout the Greater Houston area including Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Atlanta, Nationwide.

Billing That Keeps Its Schedule

Monitored servers, coordinated vendor patching and tested database restores mean a hardware failure or ransomware attempt doesn't push bills out by a week. Members get accurate statements on time, and your cash flow stays predictable.

Storm Response Without IT Surprises

When outage calls spike, the OMS, member portal and crew devices are ready because the planning happened in calm weather. Dispatchers and crews focus on restoration rather than troubleshooting a frozen server or a tablet that won't load maps.

A Clear Story for the Board

Quarterly reports translate cyber risk into plain terms your directors can act on: what's protected, what's still open and what it would take to close it. That makes budget conversations and policy decisions far easier for your general manager.

Relief for a Stretched IT Staff

Your in-house IT person gets backup for monitoring, patching, after-hours incidents and paperwork. They can take a vacation without worrying, and the co-op stops depending on one person's memory for how everything is set up.

Our Process

1
Meet with your general manager, IT staff, member services, engineering and finance to understand systems, vendors and seasonal demands.
2
Assess the office network, CIS, OMS, AMI integrations, vendor access, backups and endpoints against how attacks on co-ops actually unfold.
3
Agree on who owns what between your staff, our engineers and operational vendors, and document it so nothing falls between chairs.
4
Deploy MFA, endpoint protection, brokered vendor access and device management, starting with the systems that hold member data.
5
Segment office systems from operational networks with your engineers and set up immutable backups with a restore test around billing.
6
Provide ongoing monitoring, help desk support and quarterly board-ready reports, with a storm-season readiness review each year.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you work on SCADA, AMI head-end or substation systems?▼
We secure the IT side and the boundary, not the operational systems themselves. SCADA, substation automation, relays and the AMI head-end are the responsibility of your system engineers and their vendors, who understand the protection schemes and reliability requirements. What we do is segment the office network from those systems, manage the IT-side firewall rules, control and log who crosses the boundary, and protect the laptops and accounts engineers use. When a change touches operational equipment, we plan it together with your engineers and document it.
Does NERC CIP apply to our cooperative?▼
Many distribution cooperatives aren't NERC-registered, while some co-ops and generation and transmission cooperatives are, depending on their functions and facilities. Your compliance staff or counsel should confirm where you stand. For registered entities, we support the IT portion of CIP work, such as access records, patch documentation, logging and electronic boundary diagrams. For co-ops outside NERC's scope, we still recommend many of the same practices, because insurers, federal grant programs and your own board increasingly expect them.
Can you work alongside our existing IT person?▼
That's how most of our co-op relationships would look. Your IT staff know the members, the vendors and the quirks of your systems, and that knowledge is valuable. We add depth they can't get alone: security monitoring, a structured patching process, tested backups, help desk overflow and written documentation. We agree on a clear split of responsibilities and share one ticketing view. Support runs during business hours, with after-hours emergency response for active security incidents, so your IT person isn't the only line of defense at midnight.
How do you protect member payment information?▼
Start by knowing every place a card number touches: the online portal, IVR phone payments, counter terminals and any staff workstation that keys payments in. We help map those flows against PCI DSS 4.0 so you know your scope, then reduce it where possible by using hosted payment pages and point-to-point encrypted terminals. Payment workstations get segmented and locked down. We also train member services staff to recognize callers impersonating members to change account details, which is a common route to fraud.
What happens if ransomware hits our billing system?▼
The goal is to make that unlikely through MFA, endpoint detection, allowlisting on key servers and brokered vendor access. If it happens anyway, our engineers begin containment immediately, isolating affected systems while keeping the OMS and operational networks separated. We restore the CIS from immutable backups that were tested ahead of time and coordinate with your vendor on application recovery. Your general manager and counsel decide on member notification and regulatory reporting, and we supply the technical facts they need.
How do you get ready for storm season?▼
Each year before peak storm season, we review the systems that matter most during outages: OMS servers and integrations, the member portal, IVR and phone capacity, network links to field offices and crew devices. We confirm backups and failover work, apply pending updates early so nothing gets patched mid-event, check that dispatcher and crew accounts are current, and make sure tablets have up-to-date maps. During a major event, we keep changes frozen unless something is broken, so IT never becomes part of the problem.
Do you provide Electric Cooperatives IT Services in Houston and nearby areas?▼

Call 713-571-2390 to check coverage for your specific address.
What does Electric Cooperatives IT Services cost for a Houston business?▼
Pricing depends on your size and what you need, so we do not publish a one-size-fits-all number — but Houston businesses generally pay a flat, predictable monthly fee rather than surprise hourly bills. We start with a free, no-obligation assessment of your current setup, then give you a clear quote in plain English with no hidden costs. That way you know exactly what you are getting and what it costs before you commit.
