Your design files and signing keys travel to factories. Make sure they arrive safely.

Hardware Startups IT Services

A hardware startup ships its most valuable IP out the door every week: CAD models, schematics, Gerbers and BOMs sent to contract manufacturers and suppliers, often overseas, plus the firmware signing keys that prove your devices are genuine.

At a glance

A leaked design can show up as a clone, and a stolen signing key lets someone push malicious firmware to your customers' devices.

We run IT and security for hardware teams: engineering workstations, PLM and CAD access, supplier file sharing, lab networks, signing key protection and export control hygiene.

We support hardware startups in Texas and nationwide, remotely and with local hands for lab and office setups.

Security that keeps your designs private, signing keys offline, the build on schedule.

IT and security for teams that design physical products and hand the files to factories they don't control.

Hardware startup IT

Your IP leaves the building with every build

Hardware companies live between the office, the lab and the factory floor of a partner overseas. Designs move through CAD, PLM and email to manufacturers, components come from brokers, and firmware gets signed and shipped to devices in the field. Here's what that looks like, where it tends to break, and what we put in place to protect it.

01 · The pressure

EVT, DVT, PVT and a factory waiting on files

Each build phase means a fresh release of mechanical CAD from SolidWorks or Onshape, schematics and layouts from Altium, a BOM in Arena or NetSuite, and firmware images that have to be signed. Contract manufacturers need the right revision on time or the line idles. Engineers test prototypes on a lab bench full of connected equipment. If files go to the wrong place or a key leaks, you lose a design or your customers' trust in the device.

  • Design releases gate every build phase
  • Manufacturers need exact, current revisions
  • Firmware keys prove devices are genuine

02 · How it breaks

Emailed Gerbers and a signing key on a laptop

Design files go to suppliers as email attachments or open share links that never expire. A firmware signing key sits in a folder on one engineer's laptop, or in the build server's environment variables. A component broker's email is spoofed and finance pays a fake invoice during a shortage. Lab equipment and test PCs share the office network. And nobody's checked whether that controller or radio module needs an export license before files go abroad.

  • Open share links to suppliers that never expire
  • Signing keys stored on ordinary laptops
  • Spoofed component broker invoices

03 · What we change

Controlled releases, protected keys, separated lab

We set up a controlled supplier portal or expiring, per-supplier shares from your PLM or cloud storage, with download logging. Signing keys move into a hardware security module, a cloud key service or an offline signing process with named approvers. CAD and PLM get SSO and role-based access. Lab equipment goes on its own network. Finance verifies supplier payment changes by phone. And we work with your export counsel to tag controlled files and restrict where they're shared.

  • Expiring, logged shares per supplier
  • Signing keys in an HSM or offline process
  • Lab bench on its own network segment

04 · The after

Builds ship, and you know where every file went

Your operations lead can see exactly which revision each manufacturer downloaded and when. Firmware releases require the right people and the right hardware to sign, so a stolen laptop can't push an update. A defense or enterprise customer asking about supply chain security gets a credible answer. And when you raise your next round, diligence questions about IP protection have documentation behind them instead of hopeful assurances.

  • Download logs per supplier and revision
  • Firmware signing needs named approvers
  • IP protection backed by documentation

What We Offer

Comprehensive solutions tailored for Houston-area businesses

CAD and PLM Access Control

We secure SolidWorks PDM, Onshape, Altium 365, Arena or your PLM with SSO, MFA and role-based permissions, so contractors and suppliers see only the parts and revisions they need. Version history and backups protect against accidental overwrites, and access reviews catch former contractors still holding design access.

Contract Manufacturer File Sharing

Instead of attachments and permanent links, we set up per-supplier shares or portals with expiration dates, download logging and watermarking where your tools support it. Each manufacturer gets the release package for their job, and you can revoke access when a relationship ends or a build moves to a different factory.

Firmware Signing Key Protection

A signing key is the root of trust for every device you've shipped. We help move it off laptops and build servers into a hardware security module, cloud key management service or an offline signing workflow with named approvers and logging. We work with your firmware lead so releases still go out on schedule.

Lab and Test Network Segmentation

Oscilloscopes, spectrum analyzers, programmers and test PCs often run old software and need odd network access. We put them on a separate lab network with controlled paths to the office, manage the test PCs we can, and coordinate with equipment vendors for anything inside the instruments themselves.

Export Control Hygiene

Some components, encryption features and defense-related designs carry EAR or ITAR restrictions. We don't classify your products, which belongs with your export counsel, but we help enforce their decisions in IT: tagging controlled files, restricting who can access them and where they can be shared, and logging transfers.

Engineering Workstation Management

CAD and EDA workstations are powerful, expensive and full of IP. We manage them with encryption, EDR, patching that respects tool licensing and GPU drivers, and backups of local project files. Mac or Windows laptops for the rest of the team get the same baseline through MDM.

Designs Stay Where You Sent Them

Expiring, logged supplier shares and role-based PLM access reduce the chance your design ends up on someone else's production line, and they give you a record if you ever need to show where a file went and who downloaded it.

Devices Your Customers Can Trust

Protected signing keys mean only firmware you approved can run on devices in the field. That matters to every customer, and especially to enterprise, medical-adjacent and defense buyers who will ask how you prevent tampering.

Builds That Don't Slip on IT

Clear release processes, managed workstations and a support line that understands build phases mean a broken CAD license or a supplier who can't download a package doesn't idle a factory line for a week. Each phase starts on time.

Cleaner Diligence and Contracts

Investors, acquirers and large customers ask about IP protection and supply chain security. Documented controls give your founders a confident, honest answer and fewer surprises in deal negotiations or vendor onboarding. That record keeps getting stronger with every build.

Our Process

1
We inventory CAD, EDA and PLM tools, workstations, lab equipment, build servers, supplier sharing methods and where signing keys live today.
2
We trace how a release package travels from engineering to each manufacturer and identify open links, shared accounts and exposed keys.
3
We put SSO, MFA and role-based permissions on design and PLM tools, and bring all workstations and laptops under management.
4
We set up controlled supplier sharing and move signing keys into an HSM, cloud key service or offline signing workflow.
5
We segment the lab network, set payment verification for suppliers and help apply your export counsel's decisions to controlled files.
6
We provide ongoing IT support, quarterly access reviews and a pre-build checklist so each phase starts with the right access in place.

Frequently Asked Questions

How should we share design files with an overseas manufacturer?▼
Send only what each job needs, through a channel you control. We set up per-supplier folders or a portal from your PLM or cloud storage with expiring access, download logs and, where possible, watermarks. Avoid emailing full design packages or using permanent public links. When a build ends or you change factories, revoke access. Contractual protections matter too, but those belong with your legal team. Our part is making sure the technical controls match what the contract promises.
Where should our firmware signing key live?▼
Not on a laptop and not in plain build server variables. The usual options are a hardware security module, a cloud key management service that never exposes the private key, or an offline signing machine used only for releases with named approvers. The right choice depends on your release frequency and team size. We help you pick and set it up with your firmware lead, and we document the process so signing doesn't depend on one person remembering how it works.
Do export controls apply to a startup?▼
They can. The EAR covers many commercial items, including some encryption functions, radios and components, and ITAR covers defense articles and technical data. Sharing controlled technical data with a foreign manufacturer or even a foreign national employee can count as an export. Classification and licensing decisions belong with your export counsel or trade compliance advisor. Once they decide, we help enforce it in IT: labeling, access restrictions, sharing limits and transfer logs.
Can you secure our lab equipment?▼
We secure the network around it and the test PCs we can manage. Lab instruments often run outdated operating systems and can't take normal security software, so we place them on a separate lab network with only the connections they need. For firmware updates or configuration inside the instruments, we coordinate with the manufacturer or your lab lead rather than changing them ourselves. That keeps an old analyzer from becoming the way into your design files.
We might pursue defense contracts. What changes?▼
If you'll handle controlled unclassified information for the Department of Defense, DFARS 252.204-7012 and CMMC requirements come into play, built on NIST SP 800-171. That affects how you store design data, manage devices and control access. Starting with good practices now, like SSO, managed devices and controlled file sharing, makes that path much easier later. We can assess where you stand and plan the gap work when a contract makes it necessary.
A component broker sent new bank details. What should we do?▼
Call them back on a number you already had on file, not one from the email, before changing anything. Supplier payment fraud spikes during component shortages because buyers are rushing to secure parts. We put MFA and impersonation filtering on finance and purchasing mailboxes, set up a written verification rule for payment changes and flag lookalike domains. If money has already gone out, contact your bank immediately, and we'll help investigate the mailbox side.
