At a glance

Your acquisition and disposition records, serial engraving files, export paperwork and product designs all live on computers, and each one draws the attention of a regulator, a competitor or a thief.

We run the IT behind that work: protected electronic records with tested backups, access controls on CAD and technical data covered by ITAR or the EAR, separated networks for the engraving and CNC cells, and secured order systems for the dealers and distributors who buy from you.

We support licensed manufacturers, ammunition loaders and accessory makers in Texas and nationwide.

IT that keeps serials traceable, designs in-house, inspections calm.

Records, export-controlled designs and shop networks secured for licensed manufacturers of firearms, ammunition and parts.

Firearms and ammunition

Every receiver, every round, on the record

A licensed manufacturer answers to more than its customers. ATF expects complete records for every serialized frame or receiver, State and Commerce care where your designs and products go, and dealers expect orders shipped to a verified license. The computers holding all of that need the same care as the vault.

01 · The pressure

The records are the license

Each serial number moves from engraving to assembly to the shipping dock, and your electronic bound book has to follow it without a gap. Engineering keeps rifle and pistol models, drawings and load data that took years to develop. Sales checks every dealer's FFL before a shipment goes out. If the records system is corrupted or a disposition entry goes missing, the problem isn't downtime. It's a finding during your next ATF inspection.

  • Serial numbers tracked from engraving to shipment
  • Designs and load data worth years of R&D
  • Dealer licenses checked before every order

02 · How it breaks

A shared engraver login and a quiet download

Trouble often starts inside. The laser engraver PC uses one login for every shift, so nobody can say who ran which serial batch. A departing engineer syncs the CAD folder to a personal cloud account. A foreign national contractor gets the same file access as the rest of the design team. And because firearms makers are a target for activists and criminals alike, a phishing email that reaches the order desk can expose dealer and customer data in an afternoon.

  • One login shared across engraving shifts
  • CAD folders synced to personal cloud storage
  • Order desk mailboxes targeted by phishing

03 · What we change

Named access, controlled files, tested records

Every person gets a named account with MFA, including the engraving and assembly stations, so every entry has an owner. We back up the electronic bound book and test restores on a schedule. Design folders holding ITAR or EAR technical data get labels, restricted groups and blocked external sharing. Engraving and CNC cells move to their own network segment. Email filtering and endpoint detection cover the order desk and front office.

  • Named logins on engraving and assembly PCs
  • Bound book backups restored on a schedule
  • Restricted groups for controlled technical data

04 · The after

An inspection you can prepare for in an hour

When an industry operations investigator arrives, you pull clean records and an access history for the systems that hold them. Engineering knows who opened controlled designs and when. If a laptop disappears from a trade show, its disk is encrypted and its account is disabled from the office. Dealers keep ordering through a portal that checks their license, and your export counsel gets the logs they ask for without a scramble.

  • Access history ready for an ATF visit
  • Lost laptops encrypted and remotely disabled
  • Logs on hand for export counsel

What We Offer

Comprehensive solutions tailored for Houston-area businesses

Electronic Bound Book Protection

Your acquisition and disposition records are the backbone of the license. We protect the system that holds them, whether FastBound or an ERP module, with named accounts, MFA, change logging and backups we actually restore to prove they work. If a server fails or ransomware hits, the records come back complete.

ITAR & EAR Technical Data Control

Many commercial firearms and ammunition items moved to Commerce jurisdiction in 2020, while others stayed under ITAR. Either way, drawings, models and process specs can be export-controlled. We restrict those files to approved people, block sharing outside the company and log access. Classification decisions stay with your export counsel.

Engraving & CNC Cell Isolation

Serial engravers, CNC machines and inspection stations often run older Windows builds the OEM won't let you update. We place them on their own network segment, restrict what they can reach, and control file transfers in. Any change inside the machine software goes through the OEM or your controls integrator.

Dealer & Distributor Order Security

Wholesale orders should ship only to verified licensees. We secure the dealer portal and order desk email, set up MFA for sales staff, and help you keep FFL copies and license checks in a protected location instead of scattered inboxes and desk drawers. Changes to a dealer's ship-to address get flagged for a second look.

Insider Risk & Departure Controls

Your biggest exposures are often a disgruntled employee or a careless one. We alert on mass downloads from design shares, block USB storage on engineering PCs, and run a departure checklist that removes access the same day someone leaves, including vendor portals and the records system.

Front Office & Payment Protection

Firearms businesses get targeted by fraudsters and by people who simply dislike the industry. We filter phishing, protect accounting and payroll with MFA, and set a call-back rule for any supplier banking change, so a forged invoice for brass, powder or barrel blanks never gets paid.

Why Choose LayerLogix?

Serving businesses throughout the Greater Houston area including Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Atlanta, Nationwide.

Records That Hold Up at Inspection

Clean, backed-up records with an access trail show ATF you take recordkeeping seriously. Problems get caught in your own review rather than in an inspector's report, and a hardware failure never becomes a missing-records finding.

Designs That Stay Yours

Product designs and load development are what separate your line from everyone else's. Access controls and download alerts make it much harder for that work to walk out with a departing employee or a compromised account.

Export Questions Answered With Logs

When counsel or a government agency asks who accessed controlled technical data, you can show them. That record matters during a voluntary disclosure, a license application or a customer's export compliance review, and it beats reconstructing events from memory.

Production Keeps Moving

Isolated machine networks and tested restores mean a phishing email in the front office doesn't stop engraving, assembly or the loading line. You fix the office problem while the shop keeps running and orders keep leaving the dock on time.

Our Process

1
Inventory the systems holding bound book entries, serial engraving files, export paperwork and product designs, and note who can reach each one today.
2
Replace shared logins on shop and office PCs with named accounts and MFA, starting with the records system and engineering shares.
3
Back up the records system and design data off-site, then restore a sample to prove the backups are complete and readable.
4
Segment engraving, CNC and inspection machines from the office network, coordinating any machine-side change with the OEM or your integrator.
5
Label and restrict ITAR and EAR technical data with your export counsel's classifications, and turn on access logging and external-sharing blocks.
6
Review access, logs and backup tests every quarter, and run the departure checklist whenever an employee or contractor leaves.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can our electronic bound book live in the cloud?▼
ATF allows electronic acquisition and disposition records when the system meets its requirements, and several cloud products are built specifically for licensees. The bigger risks are usually around the system, not the hosting. Who can log in, whether entries can be altered without a trail, and whether you can export a full, readable copy if the vendor disappears all matter more than where the server sits. We set up MFA and named accounts, schedule independent exports and backups, and check that you could print or produce the records quickly during an inspection. Confirm your specific setup with ATF guidance or counsel.
Our products moved from ITAR to the EAR. Do we still need to protect the drawings?▼
Usually yes. When many commercial firearms and ammunition items moved to the Commerce Control List, their technical data generally moved with them, and the EAR still restricts exports and releases of that data to certain countries and foreign persons. Some items, parts and technical data stayed under ITAR. Your export counsel should classify what you have. Once that's done, we make the file system match: restricted folders, labeled documents, blocked personal cloud sync and logs showing who opened what. That way a classification decision on paper becomes a control that actually works.
Should our laser engraver PC be on the network at all?▼
It often needs a connection to receive serial batches or job files, but it shouldn't sit on the same network as email and web browsing. We give it a separate segment that can reach only the systems it needs, with file transfers coming from a controlled source. We don't modify the engraver software or the machine controller; those changes go through the OEM. We also replace the shared shift login with named accounts where the software allows it, so every serial batch can be tied to the person who ran it.
We let foreign nationals work in engineering. What should we check?▼
Releasing controlled technical data to a foreign person in the U.S. can be treated as an export to that person's country, under both ITAR and the EAR. Whether a license is needed depends on the data, the person's nationality and the regulation that applies, which is a decision for your export counsel. On the IT side, we set up groups so controlled folders are reachable only by approved people, log every access, and make sure contractors and new hires don't inherit broad permissions by default. That gives counsel an enforceable system to point to.
A dealer emailed new shipping instructions and a different license copy. Is that a red flag?▼
It can be. Criminals have tried to divert shipments by impersonating licensed dealers or hijacking a real dealer's email. Treat any change to a ship-to address or license on file the same way you'd treat a bank account change: verify it with the dealer using contact details you already have, and check the license through ATF's FFL eZ Check before shipping. We help by filtering spoofed email, protecting your order desk accounts with MFA and keeping license copies in a controlled location. Shipping decisions and verification rules stay with your compliance staff.
Do you only support firearms makers near your offices?▼
No. Most of our work is done remotely by U.S.-based engineers: account management, backups, monitoring, patching, endpoint security and help desk support. When something needs hands on the shop floor, such as installing a firewall or cabling a new engraving cell, we handle it ourselves near our offices or send a vetted local technician working under our engineer's direction. Security alerts are watched with 24/7 automated monitoring, and our engineers work business hours with after-hours emergency response for active incidents.
Do you provide Firearms & Ammunition Manufacturers IT Services in Houston and nearby areas?▼
Yes. LayerLogix is based in the Greater Houston area and delivers firearms & ammunition manufacturers IT services to businesses across Houston and the surrounding communities, including The Woodlands, Spring, Katy, Sugar Land, Conroe, Cypress, and Pearland. For most Houston-area clients we can be on-site the same day when something needs hands-on attention, and our help desk is available during business hours, with after-hours emergency support. Call 713-571-2390 to check coverage for your specific address.
What does Firearms & Ammunition Manufacturers IT Services cost for a Houston business?▼
Pricing depends on your size and what you need, so we do not publish a one-size-fits-all number — but Houston businesses generally pay a flat, predictable monthly fee rather than surprise hourly bills. We start with a free, no-obligation assessment of your current setup, then give you a clear quote in plain English with no hidden costs. That way you know exactly what you are getting and what it costs before you commit.
