How should we store MTRs and quality records?▼
In a managed system where records can be found by heat number, serial or order, with version history and backups that can't be altered or deleted for a set period. Scans sitting on one file server are the most common weakness we see. We help you move records into a better structure, set role-based access so only quality staff can change them and keep immutable copies off site. Retention periods should come from your quality manual, API requirements and customer contracts.
Does export control affect our IT?▼
It can. Oilfield equipment and technical data may be subject to the Export Administration Regulations, and some destinations and buyers face specific restrictions or sanctions. Classification, licensing and screening decisions belong to your trade compliance lead and counsel. On the IT side, we support the screening software, help build checks into order entry, protect technical data shared with foreign customers and keep records showing screening happened. If a classification changes, we help update access rules for the related files.
Can you protect our CNC programs without disrupting the shop?▼
Yes. We start by backing up program libraries and DNC systems, which doesn't change anything on the machines. Then we work with your maintenance team to put shop floor PCs on their own network segment, limit internet access and control USB use. Machine controls themselves stay with maintenance and the machine builders. Changes are scheduled around production, and we confirm programs still transfer correctly before calling anything done. Your programmers sign off, not us.
What should field techs do with laptops when traveling overseas?▼
Travel light. We issue laptops loaded only with what that trip needs, fully encrypted, with VPN for any outside network and remote lock if lost. Techs avoid plugging in unknown USB devices and use customer networks only through the VPN. Some destinations call for a dedicated loaner device. When they return, we check the laptop and reimage it if needed before it reconnects to your network, so anything picked up abroad stays out.
How is this different from IT for a valve or pump manufacturer?▼
There's overlap, but oilfield equipment makers carry heavier traceability and field service demands. Customers expect complete data books tied to heat numbers for pressure-containing parts, API auditors review quality records, and techs travel to rigs worldwide with company laptops. Many shops are also machining-heavy, so CNC programs are a major asset. We focus on those records, travel devices, export screening and the shop floor, alongside the usual engineering data protection.
A foreign distributor emailed new shipping and bank details. Is that normal?▼
Treat it as suspicious until confirmed. Attackers often compromise or imitate distributor mailboxes to redirect payments or shipments. Call your contact using a number you already have, confirm the change and require a second approval in accounting or logistics. Changes to the ship-to destination may also need another pass through export screening. We add impersonation filtering and look-alike domain detection to catch more of these, but verification is the step that stops the fraud.
