Keep quotes, cut lists, MTRs and trucks moving on the same day

Steel Service Centers IT Services

A steel service center lives on same-day turns, and the moment the ERP, the label printers or the EDI feed goes dark, coils sit on the floor and trucks leave half loaded.

At a glance

Your margin depends on quoting against yesterday's mill price, cutting to the right heat number and attaching the right mill test report before the load ships.

We run the IT behind that: the metals ERP and its database, the warehouse scanners and saw-line PCs, the inside sales team's quoting tools and the inbox where customers drop POs.

We harden email against the fake-invoice and changed-remittance scams that target big-ticket metals orders.

We serve distributors and processors in Texas and nationwide, with remote engineers and hands-on help when a slitter-line PC dies at shift change.

IT that keeps coils slitting, heat numbers traced, trucks loading.

Managed IT and cybersecurity built around the ERP, the saw line, the MTR file and the loading dock of a metals service center.

Metals distribution

From mill order to loaded flatbed

Your yard runs on information as much as on cranes. Inside sales quotes off live inventory, the processing floor cuts off a work order, and shipping won't release a load without the certs. When one of those links fails, nothing ships. Here's how that chain gets hit, and what we put around it.

01 · The pressure

Every order hangs on the ERP and the cert file

A normal day starts with POs landing by email and EDI, inside sales checking stock and remnants, and the floor pulling work orders for the slitter, the plasma table and the saws. Shipping needs the bill of lading, the packing list and the mill test report tied to each heat. If the ERP is down at seven, the whole building stands around. If the MTR archive is gone, you can't prove what you shipped to a customer who's asking.

  • Metals ERP drives quoting, inventory and work orders
  • MTRs must follow each heat number to the customer
  • Customer EDI and portals expect same-day confirmations

02 · How it breaks

Remittance scams, shared floor PCs and old servers

Metals orders are big, so they draw payment fraud. A buyer's mailbox gets phished, and a polite email asks you to update their bank details or a fake mill invoice lands with new wiring instructions. On the floor, a saw-line PC still runs an old Windows build with one shared login nobody has changed in years. The ERP server sits in a closet with backups that were never test-restored. Ransomware only needs one of those.

  • Changed-bank-account emails on large mill invoices
  • Shared logins on processing-line and shipping PCs
  • On-prem ERP with untested backups in a closet

03 · What we change

Locked mailboxes, named logins and restorable ERP

We put phishing-resistant MFA and conditional access on every mailbox that touches purchasing or receivables, and we add a call-back rule for any bank change. Floor PCs get named or kiosk logins, current patches, and application control so only the line software runs. We segment the processing equipment network from the office. The ERP gets immutable, off-site backups with scheduled restore tests, plus 24/7 automated monitoring on the servers and endpoints.

  • MFA and call-back verification for any bank change
  • Kiosk or named logins with app control on the floor
  • Immutable ERP backups with tested restores

04 · The after

Ship on time and answer the cert question fast

Your inside sales team quotes without wondering whether the system will hang. When a customer's quality group asks for the MTR on a heat you shipped last spring, you pull it in a minute. Your insurer's questionnaire gets real answers about MFA, backups and EDR. The yard manager stops being the IT person, and a failed shipping PC turns into a quick swap instead of a lost afternoon.

  • MTRs retrievable by heat, order or customer
  • Clear MFA, backup and EDR answers for insurers
  • Floor PC failures handled without stopping a line

What We Offer

Comprehensive solutions tailored for Houston-area businesses

Metals ERP Hosting & Support

Whether you run your ERP on a server in the back office or in a hosted environment, we keep the database, the application server and the client installs healthy. We patch on a schedule that avoids month-end and inventory counts, watch disk and SQL health, and work with your ERP vendor when an update or integration needs both sides on the call.

MTR & Certification Document Control

Mill test reports and certs of conformance are the paperwork your customers' quality teams check first. We set up structured, backed-up storage tied to heat numbers and orders, with permissions so only the right people can edit, and retention so an old cert is still there when a customer or auditor asks for it years later.

Payment & Invoice Fraud Controls

Large mill purchases and customer remittances make your AP and AR inboxes a target. We lock those mailboxes with strong MFA, flag external senders and lookalike domains, set mailbox rule alerts, and help your controller write a call-back procedure for any vendor bank change. A fake remittance email should hit a wall, not a wire.

Processing Floor & Warehouse Endpoints

Saw lines, slitters, plasma tables and shipping stations usually lean on a PC, a label printer and handheld scanners. We inventory them, put each on supported software or isolate the ones that can't be upgraded, replace shared logins, and keep spares imaged so a dead station is back in service quickly. Changes inside machine controls stay with the OEM.

EDI & Customer Portal Connectivity

OEM and fabricator customers send orders through EDI or supplier portals and expect quick acknowledgments and ASNs. We keep the connectivity, certificates and credentials behind those feeds working, monitor for failures, and store portal logins in a shared vault instead of a spreadsheet so they don't walk out the door with an employee.

Branch & Yard Networking

Big steel buildings and outdoor yards are hard on Wi-Fi, and scanners drop where crane bays block the signal. We design industrial-grade wireless for the warehouse and yard, link branches over secure SD-WAN, add cellular failover so shipping can keep printing, and keep the machine network separate from office traffic.

Why Choose LayerLogix?

Serving businesses throughout the Greater Houston area including Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Atlanta, Nationwide.

Fewer Lost Shifts

When the ERP, printers and scanners stay up, your floor runs the work orders it planned. Monitoring catches failing disks and full databases before the morning rush, and imaged spare PCs mean a dead station doesn't idle a processing line.

Cert Questions Answered Fast

Customers who build pressure vessels, structures or equipment need proof of what they bought. With MTRs filed by heat and order and backed up off-site, your quality person can answer them quickly and confidently, even when the shipment went out long before they asked.

Wires Go Where They Should

Mailbox hardening plus a written verification step for bank changes closes the most common way metals companies lose money online. Your AP clerk gets a clear rule to follow instead of a judgment call under deadline pressure.

Insurance Renewals Without the Scramble

Underwriters ask about MFA, endpoint detection, backups and segmentation. We document what's in place so your broker gets accurate, specific answers, and you know which gaps to close before renewal rather than after a denial.

Our Process

1
Walk the office, warehouse and yard to map the ERP, floor PCs, scanners, printers, EDI links and who logs into what.
2
Review email security, backups and remote access, then rank the risks by how badly each one would stop shipping.
3
Lock down AP, AR and purchasing mailboxes with MFA and help your controller set a bank-change call-back rule.
4
Replace shared floor logins, patch or isolate older line PCs, and separate the processing equipment network from office traffic.
5
Move the ERP to immutable, off-site backups, schedule restore tests, and turn on endpoint detection and automated monitoring.
6
Meet each quarter to review incidents, upcoming ERP changes, insurance questions and new branches or processing lines.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you support our metals ERP, or do we still need the vendor?▼
You'll still want your ERP vendor for application bugs, upgrades and custom reports, since they own the code. We handle everything around it: the server or hosted environment, SQL health, Windows patching, user accounts, client installs, printers and the network the floor depends on. When an issue straddles both sides, like a slow report that might be the database or might be a code change, we open the ticket with the vendor, give them logs and access, and stay on until it's fixed. You get one call instead of finger-pointing between the vendor and whoever set up the server.
How should we store mill test reports so we can find them later?▼
Start with a consistent naming or indexing scheme tied to heat number, PO and customer order, since that's how quality people actually search. Many ERPs can attach the MTR to the receipt and carry it through to the shipment; if yours does, we make sure those attachments are on backed-up storage. If certs live in scanned folders, we organize them in SharePoint or a document system with search, edit permissions and a retention policy. The goal is that anyone in quality can pull the right cert in a minute, and nobody can accidentally overwrite one.
A customer emailed asking us to send payment to a new bank account. What now?▼
Don't reply to that email and don't use any phone number in it. Call the vendor or customer at the number you already have on file and confirm the change with someone you know. Metals transactions are large, so payment-change scams show up often, and they frequently come from a real but compromised mailbox. We help you put this check in writing so it's routine, not personal. We also lock down your own mailboxes and watch for suspicious forwarding rules, which is how attackers usually sit quietly inside a thread before striking.
Our saw line runs on an old Windows PC the OEM won't upgrade. Is that a problem?▼
It's a risk, but it's a common one and it can be managed. We don't touch the machine's control software, since changes there belong to the OEM or your controls contractor. What we do is fence the PC in: put it on its own network segment, block it from browsing and email, remove shared admin logins, and limit what can talk to it. We keep a tested image so it can be rebuilt quickly. When you're ready to replace the equipment or controller, we coordinate the IT side with the OEM so the new setup starts clean.
Do we need to worry about defense or CUI rules as a service center?▼
Only if your customers flow those requirements down. If you supply metals to defense contractors and receive drawings or technical data marked as controlled unclassified information, DFARS 252.204-7012 and NIST SP 800-171 may apply to the systems that handle that data. Specialty metals clauses can also bring extra documentation on melt origin. Plenty of service centers never see CUI at all. We'll look at your contracts and the data you actually receive, then tell you plainly whether you need a scoped enclave or just good general security. Your counsel should confirm contract obligations.
Can you help with multiple branches and yards?▼
Yes. Many metals distributors grow by adding branches or buying a competitor, and each one comes with its own server, its own Wi-Fi and its own habits. We bring each site onto a common setup: one identity system, secure SD-WAN back to the ERP, standard floor PC images and consistent backups. Remote engineers do most of the work. When a site needs hands-on help, we send someone locally near our offices or direct a vetted local technician who follows our instructions, so the work matches the rest of your network.
Do you provide Steel Service Centers IT Services in Houston and nearby areas?▼
Yes. LayerLogix is based in the Greater Houston area and delivers steel service centers IT services to businesses across Houston and the surrounding communities, including The Woodlands, Spring, Katy, Sugar Land, Conroe, Cypress, and Pearland. For most Houston-area clients we can be on-site the same day when something needs hands-on attention, and our help desk is available during business hours, with after-hours emergency support. Call 713-571-2390 to check coverage for your specific address.
What does Steel Service Centers IT Services cost for a Houston business?▼
Pricing depends on your size and what you need, so we do not publish a one-size-fits-all number — but Houston businesses generally pay a flat, predictable monthly fee rather than surprise hourly bills. We start with a free, no-obligation assessment of your current setup, then give you a clear quote in plain English with no hidden costs. That way you know exactly what you are getting and what it costs before you commit.
