Bids out, nests to the laser, steel paid for and shop drawings approved

Metal Fabrication Shops IT Services

A fab shop’s week runs on drawings moving in and out: bid sets from general contractors, shop drawings going back for approval, nests heading to the laser or plasma table, and mill test reports that have to match every heat number.

At a glance

When a phished estimator mailbox leaks a bid or a server crash wipes out approved shop drawings, the cost shows up as lost jobs and rework.

We run managed IT and cybersecurity for structural steel, sheet metal and custom fabrication shops.

We keep nesting and detailing workstations fast, protect the file server where drawings and MTRs live, verify payment changes before money moves, and give field erection crews safe access from the jobsite. We work with shops in Texas and nationwide.

IT that keeps bids going out, nests on the table, MTRs traceable.

Managed IT and security for fab shops, from the estimator’s inbox to the plasma table to the erection crew’s tablet.

Fab shop IT

Drawings in, steel out, nothing lost between

A fabrication job touches more hands than most owners realize: the estimator, the detailer, the project manager, the nesting operator, the welder pulling a drawing on the floor and the crew erecting it in the field. Each handoff is a file. Here’s where those files get exposed and how we keep the chain intact.

01 · The pressure

Every job is a stack of revisions

Your estimators download bid sets from plan rooms and contractor portals. Detailers turn approved drawings into shop drawings and CNC files. Nesting operators push cut lists to the laser, plasma or punch. QC ties every piece to a heat number and its mill test report. If the file server dies or someone fabricates from an old revision, you’re cutting scrap and paying for it twice. Miss a bid deadline because email is down and that job is simply gone.

  • Bid sets arrive from many contractor portals
  • Shop drawings go through approval cycles
  • MTRs must match every heat number shipped

02 · How it breaks

A fake bid invitation lands in the estimator’s inbox

Fab shops get dozens of legitimate plan room invites, which makes a fake one easy to click. The link asks for a Microsoft 365 password, and now an attacker reads your mailbox, learns which steel supplier you buy from, and emails your bookkeeper new bank details. Meanwhile a nesting PC running an old Windows build, connected straight to the office network so drawings can be copied over, becomes the easy way in for ransomware.

  • Fake plan room invites steal mailbox logins
  • Spoofed supplier emails change bank details
  • Old nesting PCs sit on the office network

03 · What we change

Lock the inbox, isolate the table, verify the money

Phishing-resistant MFA and conditional access go on every mailbox, starting with estimating and accounting. We add link scanning and flag first-time senders. Nesting and CNC programming PCs move to their own network segment with a controlled share for job files, so the laser never needs internet access. Payment changes require a phone callback to a number already on file. Drawing revisions get versioned backups, and field crews reach current drawings through a managed tablet instead of a personal phone.

  • MFA and link scanning on every mailbox
  • CNC and nesting PCs on their own segment
  • Callback rule for any vendor bank change

04 · The after

You bid more and fight fewer fires

Estimators work from a clean inbox and a fast workstation, and bids go out on time. The shop floor pulls the current revision, every time, because there’s only one place to get it. Your bookkeeper has a rule to point to when a supplier suddenly wants payment sent somewhere new. When a general contractor’s prequalification form asks about cybersecurity and backups, you have real answers. And if a machine PC fails, it’s reimaged instead of rebuilt by guesswork.

  • One trusted source for every drawing revision
  • A payment-change rule your team actually follows
  • Cyber answers ready for GC prequalification

What We Offer

Comprehensive solutions tailored for Houston-area businesses

Estimating and Bid Inbox Protection

Estimators open more unknown links and attachments than anyone else in the shop. We put phishing-resistant MFA, link rewriting and attachment sandboxing on those mailboxes, and we flag messages from look-alike domains. Large bid sets get a safe download path, so nobody has to disable protections just to pull plans before a deadline.

Nesting and CNC PC Isolation

Laser, plasma, waterjet and punch programming PCs move to their own network segment with a single controlled share for job files. They stop browsing the web and checking email. If the control PC runs an older operating system the OEM still requires, we wall it off and coordinate any changes with the machine vendor instead of forcing updates.

Shop Drawing and Revision Control

We organize the file server so each job has one current set of shop drawings, with older revisions archived and read-only. Versioned backups mean an overwritten DWG or a deleted approval stamp comes back quickly. Permissions keep the floor viewing drawings and detailers editing them, which cuts down on cutting from the wrong revision.

Detailing Workstation Performance

Tekla, SolidWorks and nesting software punish slow hardware. We spec workstations with the right GPUs, memory and storage, manage license servers so seats don’t mysteriously disappear, and patch on a schedule that doesn’t interrupt a detailer halfway through a big model. When something does break, we know the software and its quirks.

Payment Change Verification

Steel orders and subcontract payments are large and regular, which makes them a favorite target for business email compromise. We help you set a written callback rule for any banking change, add banners to external emails, and alert on mailbox forwarding rules an attacker would create. Your bookkeeper gets a process, not just a warning.

Field Crew and Jobsite Access

Erection crews and field measurers need current drawings and the ability to send photos back. We set up managed tablets or phones with the drawings app, a VPN or zero-trust access to the file server, and remote wipe for lost devices. Jobsite hotspots get configured so the crew isn’t joining random open Wi-Fi to download a sheet.

Why Choose LayerLogix?

Serving businesses throughout the Greater Houston area including Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Atlanta, Nationwide.

Fewer Jobs Cut From Old Revisions

A single, permission-controlled home for shop drawings means the welder and the nesting operator are looking at the same sheet the engineer approved. That cuts scrap, rework and the awkward phone call to the contractor explaining a field fix.

Protection for Big Supplier Payments

A callback rule, mailbox monitoring and external email warnings make it far harder for a spoofed steel supplier or subcontractor to redirect your payment. Your team has a clear process instead of relying on instinct when an urgent email arrives on a Friday afternoon.

Bids That Go Out on Deadline

Reliable email, fast estimating workstations and a working VPN for the estimator bidding from home mean you don’t lose a job because Outlook froze or the plan download failed an hour before the due time.

Stronger Prequalification Answers

General contractors and owners increasingly ask subcontractors about backups, MFA and incident plans. You’ll have documented answers and a short evidence pack, which helps you get on bid lists and keeps you there when the owner’s risk team starts asking questions.

Our Process

1
Inventory every workstation, server, CNC programming PC, license server, tablet and vendor connection across the office, shop floor and field crews.
2
Review how drawings flow from bid to detail to nest to field, and where duplicate or outdated copies are hiding.
3
Lock down email with MFA, link protection and forwarding-rule alerts, starting with estimating, project management and accounting mailboxes.
4
Move nesting and CNC PCs onto their own network segment, coordinating with machine vendors before touching any control PC.
5
Restructure the file server around one current revision per job, then put versioned and immutable backups behind it and test a restore.
6
Meet quarterly to review alerts, patch status, payment-fraud attempts and any prequalification questionnaires you need answered.

Frequently Asked Questions

Our laser runs on an old version of Windows. Do we have to replace it?▼
Usually not right away. Many cutting and punching machines ship with a control PC whose operating system is tied to the OEM’s software, and updating it yourself can void support. What we do instead is isolate it: its own network segment, no internet access, no email, and a single controlled path for job files. We also make sure its configuration and part programs are backed up. When the OEM offers a supported upgrade, we plan it with them. Any change inside the machine stays with the vendor.
How do we stop someone from fabricating from an old drawing revision?▼
Most of it is file organization and permissions. We set up a job folder structure where only the current approved set is visible to the shop floor, older revisions move to a read-only archive, and detailers are the only ones who can publish new sheets. Floor tablets or kiosk PCs open drawings from that one location. Combined with versioned backups, you get a single source of truth and the ability to see who changed what and when if a question comes up.
A supplier emailed new bank details. What should our bookkeeper do?▼
Don’t pay to the new account until someone calls the supplier at a phone number you already had on file, not one in the email. That single habit stops most payment redirection fraud. We help you write it down as a policy, add warning banners on external email, and monitor for signs an attacker is already inside a mailbox, such as hidden forwarding rules. If money has already been sent, call your bank immediately and we’ll help investigate the mailbox side.
We do some defense work. Are our drawings controlled?▼
Possibly. Drawings for defense articles can fall under ITAR, and a prime contractor’s purchase order may also carry DFARS clauses that require NIST SP 800-171 controls for Controlled Unclassified Information. Your customer should tell you how their data is marked. If any of it is controlled, it can’t be stored just anywhere, emailed to personal accounts or shown to unauthorized foreign persons. We can help you set up a separate, controlled environment for that work. Legal interpretation of your contracts belongs with your counsel.
Can our erection crews get drawings in the field safely?▼
Yes. We usually set up company-managed tablets with the drawing viewer and a secure connection back to the file server, so crews always open the current revision. If a tablet is lost on a jobsite, we can wipe it remotely. We also configure hotspots so crews aren’t relying on open Wi-Fi, and we keep photo uploads flowing back to the project folder. Personal phones can work too, with app-level controls that keep company data separate from the rest of the device.
What happens if ransomware hits the shop?▼
Endpoint detection should catch and isolate the infected machine early. Our team responds during business hours, with after-hours emergency response for active incidents, and automated monitoring watches endpoints and servers around the clock. We cut the affected systems off, figure out how the attacker got in, and restore from immutable backups that ransomware can’t encrypt. Decisions about notifying customers, insurers or law enforcement are yours, with your counsel and insurer. Our job is to get drawings, estimates and the shop floor working again.
