What do the CPNI rules require from our IT?▼
The FCC's CPNI rules in 47 CFR 64.2001 and following require carriers to protect customer proprietary network information, authenticate customers before releasing call detail over the phone or online, notify customers of certain account changes, train staff, keep records and file an annual compliance certification. They also set breach notification duties. The rules don't name specific products, so we help you implement working controls and evidence. Your regulatory counsel decides how the rules apply to your services.
Do the CPNI rules apply to VoIP providers?▼
The FCC has applied its CPNI rules to interconnected VoIP providers as well as traditional carriers. If you offer interconnected VoIP, you should assume they apply and confirm the details with your regulatory counsel. The practical work is similar either way: authenticate customers before discussing call records, limit and log employee access, protect online account portals with strong authentication, and keep training and certification records current. We set up the IT side of each piece.
How do we stop SIM-swap and port-out fraud?▼
Layer the defenses. Require strong customer authentication before any port-out or SIM change, notify the existing account holder through a channel the attacker doesn't control, flag unusual patterns like several changes on one account in a short window, and require supervisor approval for high-risk requests. Protect employee accounts that can approve changes with MFA and monitoring, since insiders and phished staff are part of many cases. FCC rules address these practices too, and your counsel can confirm current requirements.
Will you manage our switching platform?▼
No. Your network engineers and the platform vendor own BroadWorks, Metaswitch, session border controllers and transport gear. We focus on the corporate environment and the boundary: separating management networks, securing the workstations and jump hosts engineers use to reach those systems, and making sure vendor remote access is logged, time-limited and protected with MFA. If you want help reviewing who has access to network management, we're glad to do that with your team.
What happens if CPNI is breached?▼
Act quickly and preserve evidence. We help contain the incident, determine which accounts and records were accessed using system logs, and document the timeline. The FCC's rules require notifying federal law enforcement and, in many cases, affected customers, with specific timing and content requirements. Those filings and the decision about customer notice belong with your counsel and compliance officer. Our job is to give them accurate facts fast so they can meet the deadlines.
We're a small rural telco. Is this realistic for us?▼
Yes. Smaller carriers face the same CPNI duties with fewer people, which makes clear procedures and good tooling more valuable, not less. Individual CSR logins with MFA, logged CPNI access, a written authentication script, port-out checks and separated management networks aren't large projects. We handle corporate IT and security day to day so your small staff can focus on customers and the network, and we keep the evidence organized for certification time.
