Mission brief

Most offices aren't one platform anymore. The front desk runs Windows, the owner carries a MacBook, and the designer won't give theirs up. Patching sounds like housekeeping until a missed update on either one is how someone gets in. The hard part is knowing which updates to rush and which to test, how to roll them out without breaking the accounting software or the design tools, and when a machine stops being worth keeping.

This track gives Windows and Mac the same treatment: Microsoft's monthly Patch Tuesday and Apple's security updates, yearly Windows feature updates and major macOS upgrades, end-of-support dates on both sides, BitLocker and FileVault encryption, and running a mixed fleet from one place. Lessons written about a specific release stay up as a record of what shipped and what mattered.

What you'll be able to do

  • Run a monthly Windows patch cadence with test rings and a rollback plan
  • Keep Macs current with Apple's security updates and a deadline for major macOS upgrades
  • Turn on BitLocker and FileVault with recovery keys you can actually find
  • Decide what happens to Windows 10 machines after end of support, Extended Security Updates included
  • Spot Macs that no longer get macOS updates before they become the weak link
  • Manage Windows PCs and Macs from one console instead of two half-finished ones
