What happens to our treatment records if the herd computer dies?▼
Without a working backup, they may be gone or out of date, and that's a real risk for withdrawal times and milk quality. With our setup, herd data is backed up automatically to immutable storage, so we can restore it to a replacement machine or make it available on another device quickly. We also suggest a simple printed or mobile list of currently treated cows as a short-term fallback, since nothing replaces a second way to check before milking.
Do you work on our milking robots or parlor equipment?▼
No, and you wouldn't want us to. Robots, rotary controls, meters and their software belong to the manufacturer and your dealer. We handle the IT around them: the network they sit on, the PCs that talk to them, internet access, backups of the data they produce and how the dealer connects remotely. When the dealer needs a network change, we coordinate with their technician so the equipment keeps working and your security doesn't take a step backward.
Our dealer has permanent remote access to the robot PC. Is that a problem?▼
It can be. Always-on remote tools are a common way attackers get in, especially when the password is shared or never changes. We don't cut the dealer off, because you need their support. Instead, we route that access through a gateway that requires their own login, logs every session and can be enabled only when they need it. You keep the support relationship and gain control over when and how anyone connects to your milking systems.
How should our vet and nutritionist get into our data?▼
With their own credentials, not yours. Many herd and feed platforms support separate user accounts or read-only shares, and we set those up with only the access each advisor needs. That way you can see who changed what, and when you switch nutritionists or a vet leaves the practice, removing their access is quick. It also means a breach at an advisor's office doesn't hand someone a working login to your whole operation.
Can you support a dairy with several sites or a heifer operation elsewhere?▼
Yes. We connect sites with managed firewalls and VPN tunnels, add cellular backup where rural internet is shaky and keep the same security standard everywhere. Heifer growers, calf ranches and satellite barns can share herd data with the main dairy through controlled access instead of emailed spreadsheets. Automated monitoring tells us when a site link drops, so we're working on it before your herdsman finds out the hard way at the next milking.
Are barn cameras and sensors a security risk?▼
They can be. Cheap cameras and sensors often ship with default passwords, rarely get updates and sometimes connect straight to the internet. We put them on their own network segment, change default credentials, update firmware where the maker supports it and block them from reaching your office systems. You still get calving alerts and remote views on your phone, but a camera can't be used as a stepping stone to your herd data or bank accounts.
Do you provide Dairies IT Services in Houston and nearby areas?▼
Yes. LayerLogix is based in the Greater Houston area and delivers dairies IT services to businesses across Houston and the surrounding communities, including The Woodlands, Spring, Katy, Sugar Land, Conroe, Cypress, and Pearland. For most Houston-area clients we can be on-site the same day when something needs hands-on attention, and our help desk is available during business hours, with after-hours emergency support. Call 713-571-2390 to check coverage for your specific address.
What does Dairies IT Services cost for a Houston business?▼
Pricing depends on your size and what you need, so we do not publish a one-size-fits-all number — but Houston businesses generally pay a flat, predictable monthly fee rather than surprise hourly bills. We start with a free, no-obligation assessment of your current setup, then give you a clear quote in plain English with no hidden costs. That way you know exactly what you are getting and what it costs before you commit.
