Will you change anything in our batching system?▼
No. The batching software, PLCs and mill automation belong to your automation integrator, and changes inside them stay with that integrator. We secure the IT side and the boundary: the network segment batching sits on, the firewall rules around it, the remote access path the integrator uses and the office systems that send formulas to it. When a boundary change might affect batching, we plan it with your integrator and schedule it during downtime, so the mill isn't surprised during a run.
How should we protect our formulas?▼
Start with who can change them. We set up role-based access in your formulation software so only nutritionists or designated staff can modify rations, and others can view or run them. Version history gets kept and backed up immutably, so an accidental or malicious change can be traced and reversed. We also restrict where formula exports can be sent, since a formula leaving by personal email is a business risk too. The decisions on who should have access stay yours.
Do VFD and medicated feed records have to be electronic?▼
Not necessarily, but many mills now receive VFD orders electronically and keep batch records in software. Under the VFD regulation, distributors keep copies of VFD orders for a set retention period, and medicated feed rules carry their own record requirements. Your compliance lead and counsel should confirm the specifics for your mill. Our part is making sure electronic records are protected, backed up, access-controlled and quick to produce when an investigator asks.
Our mill runs early mornings. When do you do maintenance?▼
When the mill is down, not when it's convenient for us. We schedule patching and upgrades around your production schedule, often on weekends or between shifts, and avoid busy seasons. Automated monitoring watches servers, backups and disk space around the clock so problems get flagged before your first shift arrives. Engineers work business hours, with after-hours emergency response for active incidents, and we'll agree in advance on what counts as urgent for your mill.
What does a ransomware attack on a feed mill look like?▼
Usually it starts with an office email and spreads across a flat network to file servers, the ERP and sometimes the formulation server or batching workstation. The mill stops because operators can't get formulas or batch tickets. We reduce that risk by separating networks, adding MFA, putting managed detection with 24/7 SOC monitoring on every endpoint and keeping immutable backups. We also write a recovery order, usually formulation and batching records first, so production can restart quickly.
Do you help with FSMA preventive controls for animal food?▼
We support the IT side of it. Your food safety plan under 21 CFR Part 507 relies on monitoring, verification and corrective action records, and many mills keep those electronically. We make sure that system or shared storage has proper access controls, change logs and backups. Writing the food safety plan and deciding on preventive controls belongs to your preventive controls qualified individual. We just make sure the records they depend on don't disappear in an outage.
