How do cattle sale scams usually work?▼
Usually through email. A criminal gets access to the ranch's mailbox or the buyer's, quietly watches a sale or purchase come together, then sends a message with new bank details right before money moves. Because it comes from a real account in a real conversation, it looks legitimate. The defense is simple and works: any change to wiring instructions gets confirmed by phone with someone you already know, using a number you already have. We also secure your email so it's harder to hijack in the first place.
Our herd records are in a spreadsheet on one computer. Is that a problem?▼
It's a risk worth fixing. Hard drives fail, laptops get stolen and ransomware encrypts files, and herd history built over years is hard to recreate. We set up automatic cloud backups with version history, so you can recover yesterday's file or last month's. If you'd like to move to dedicated herd software like CattleMax or Performance Beef, we can help with setup and data transfer. Either way, the records stop depending on one machine.
Does the USDA traceability rule affect our records?▼
USDA's animal disease traceability regulations in 9 CFR Part 86 set official identification and recordkeeping requirements for certain cattle and bison moving interstate, including electronic ID tags for covered animals. Your veterinarian, state animal health office and sale barn are the best guides on exactly which animals and movements are covered. Our role is making sure the tag and movement records you keep are backed up, organized and easy to produce when someone asks.
Can you get decent internet out to our headquarters and barns?▼
Usually, yes. We look at satellite services like Starlink, fixed wireless, cellular and any wired options at your location, and set up a primary connection with a backup. To reach barns, shops or hunting camps, we use point-to-point radios or outdoor mesh Wi-Fi. We'll be straightforward about what terrain and distance allow. Once it's set up, we monitor it remotely and can often fix problems without anyone driving out. Outages get caught early.
Are our water tank sensors and game cameras a security risk?▼
They can be, mostly because they ship with default passwords and often share a network with the office computer. A compromised camera can become a way into that network. We put sensors and cameras on their own network, change default passwords, secure the apps you use to check them and keep their accounts protected. Firmware and device settings stay with the vendor, and we coordinate with them when updates are needed.
We run hunts on the ranch. What should we change?▼
Take card payments through a processor or booking platform rather than writing card numbers down or receiving them by email, which also keeps you on the right side of card industry rules. Give guests their own Wi-Fi network that can't reach ranch computers or sensors. Protect the email and booking accounts guests interact with, since a hijacked booking inbox can be used to send fake deposit requests. We set all of this up and support it during hunting season.

What does Ranches IT Services cost for a Houston business?▼
Pricing depends on your size and what you need, so we do not publish a one-size-fits-all number — but Houston businesses generally pay a flat, predictable monthly fee rather than surprise hourly bills. We start with a free, no-obligation assessment of your current setup, then give you a clear quote in plain English with no hidden costs. That way you know exactly what you are getting and what it costs before you commit.
