Spring ship weeks, climate computers and garden center registers that hold up

Nurseries & Greenhouses IT Services

A nursery or greenhouse makes much of its year in a few spring weeks, and if the order system, availability list or ship-week scheduling goes down then, trucks leave half-loaded and retail buyers move on.

At a glance

Behind the benches you're running inventory and order software, availability feeds to brokers, label and tag printing, a climate control system that growers check from their phones and often a retail garden center with its own registers.

We manage the IT side for growers and garden centers in Texas and nationwide: networks across houses and fields, order and POS systems, Microsoft 365, backups and security monitoring, working with your climate control vendor on anything inside their system.

IT that keeps orders shipping, tags printing, registers ringing.

Order, inventory and retail systems ready for ship weeks, with climate control access locked down at the edge.

Growers & garden centers

A crop year decided in a few spring weeks

You've spent months growing inventory, and spring is when it turns into revenue. Order processing, tag printing, ship-week scheduling and retail registers all peak at once. Here's how IT fails growers during that crunch, how attackers get in and what we change so ship weeks go out full.

01 · The pressure

Ship weeks and Saturday crowds

Your sales team updates availability daily for brokers and box-store buyers, order pickers pull carts by tag and location, and the shipping office books trucks by week. Meanwhile growers check temperature and irrigation from their phones, and if you run a garden center, Saturday registers are lined up to the door. A dead order server or a broken connection to the main greenhouse during that window means mis-picked orders, missed trucks and plants that end up in the compost pile.

  • Daily availability lists for brokers and buyers
  • Ship-week scheduling and pick tickets
  • Garden center registers on peak weekends

02 · How it breaks

Remote climate access and a shared office PC

Climate control computers often get set up with remote access so growers and the vendor can check in from anywhere, sometimes through a port opened on the office router years ago. The sales office shares one PC and one password, which also opens the order system and email. Wi-Fi was stretched across houses with consumer extenders. Then a phished email in the office hands an attacker that shared login, and the same flat network reaches everything.

  • Climate control reachable through an open router port
  • One shared PC and password for the sales office
  • Consumer extenders spread across greenhouse ranges

03 · What we change

A real network and controlled remote access

We design wireless and wired links that reach every house, headhouse and shipping dock, then separate office, retail, climate control and guest traffic. Remote access to climate systems moves behind a secure gateway with MFA, coordinated with your vendor so their support still works. Every shared password gets replaced by a named login. Order and inventory data get immutable backups, registers get PCI-focused segmentation and every PC gets managed detection with 24/7 SOC monitoring.

  • Coverage across every house and the shipping dock
  • Climate control access behind MFA, set up with the vendor
  • Registers segmented from office and guest Wi-Fi

04 · The after

Spring is busy, not fragile

Your sales manager trusts that availability and orders will be there every morning of ship season. Growers still check houses from their phones, through access that doesn't leave a door open for strangers. Your garden center's card processor gets clean answers about how registers are protected. When the owner asks what happens if the office server dies in April, there's a tested answer and a recovery time you've already measured.

  • Orders and availability backed up and tested
  • Grower phone access without open ports
  • Clean answers for your card processor

What We Offer

Comprehensive solutions tailored for Houston-area businesses

Order & Inventory System Support

Nursery management platforms, ERPs and the spreadsheets that fill gaps between them hold your availability, orders and pricing. We support the servers or cloud services underneath, maintain databases, coordinate upgrades with vendors and schedule changes for summer and fall, never in ship season. Backups get tested before each one.

Greenhouse Range Networking

Greenhouse ranges stretch wireless past its limits. We plan point-to-point links, outdoor-rated access points and switches for headhouses and docks, so pick tablets and tag printers work at the far end of the range and you can retire the chain of consumer extenders. Automated monitoring flags weak spots early.

Climate Control Boundary Security

Systems like Argus Controls and Priva run your environment, and they belong to your grower and vendor. We secure how they connect: separate network segments, remote access through an MFA-protected gateway instead of open ports and monitoring at the boundary, coordinating every change with the vendor first.

Garden Center POS & Card Security

Retail registers running platforms like Epicor Eagle or Square need patching, segmentation from office PCs and support for your PCI DSS self-assessment. We keep registers, receipt printers and scanners working through spring weekends and isolate them so a compromised office machine can't reach card data.

Tag, Label & Pick Printing

Plant tags, UPC labels and pick tickets have to print correctly when orders spike. We support label printers and the servers that drive them, store templates safely and keep spare printers configured, so a failed printer during ship week is a quick swap instead of a halt.

Grower & Field Records Protection

Spray and application records, worker training files and phytosanitary paperwork are records you may need to produce. We put them in organized, backed-up storage with permissions by role, so field and compliance documents aren't scattered across personal phones and one office laptop. Leaving staff lose access the same day.

Why Choose LayerLogix?

Serving businesses throughout the Greater Houston area including Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Atlanta, Nationwide.

Fuller Trucks in Ship Season

When order and inventory systems stay up and pick tablets reach every house, orders get pulled accurately and trucks leave full. Fewer missed or mis-picked orders protects your relationship with brokers and box-store buyers when they matter most.

Safer Remote Grower Access

Growers keep checking temperature and irrigation from their phones, through access that requires MFA and goes through a gateway. You get the convenience without a climate system exposed to anyone scanning the internet for open ports.

Fewer Weekend Register Problems

Garden center registers get patched and monitored ahead of spring, with spare hardware ready. Card data stays isolated from the office network, which makes your processor's questionnaire simpler and keeps a lost office laptop from becoming a card breach.

Maintenance Planned Around Crops

Upgrades, hardware refreshes and network projects happen in summer and fall. Our U.S.-based engineers work business hours, with after-hours emergency response for active incidents, so a failure during ship season still gets attention fast. Spring stays a growing problem, not an IT one.

Our Process

1
Walk the range, headhouses, shipping dock, office and retail area to document network coverage, devices and every remote access connection.
2
Identify which systems sales, shipping and retail can't run without during spring, and when each one peaks.
3
Design and install coverage for houses and docks, separating office, retail, climate control and guest traffic.
4
Move climate control remote access behind an MFA gateway in coordination with your vendor, and close open router ports.
5
Back up order and inventory data immutably, run a restore test and segment registers for PCI DSS self-assessment.
6
Review access, upcoming season readiness and open projects with you before spring and again after the season ends.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can you work on our climate control system?▼
We work around it, not inside it. The climate computer, its sensors and its programming belong to your growers and the vendor, like Argus or Priva. We put it on its own network segment, replace open router ports with a remote access gateway that requires MFA and monitor the boundary. We coordinate with the vendor so their remote support keeps working through the new setup. If a change could affect how the system talks to sensors or controllers, we plan it with them first.
Wi-Fi doesn't reach our back houses. What's the fix?▼
Usually it's a proper wireless design instead of more extenders. Long ranges often need point-to-point links between buildings, outdoor-rated access points and a few switches in headhouses fed by fiber or wireless backhaul. We survey the range, place gear where pickers and growers actually work and set it up so devices roam cleanly. Humidity and metal structures are hard on equipment, so we choose hardware rated for the environment rather than office gear that fails after one summer.
We run a retail garden center too. Do the registers need special handling?▼
Yes. Card data has to be kept separate from the rest of your network, and your card processor will ask you to complete a PCI DSS self-assessment questionnaire each year. We segment registers and payment devices from office PCs and guest Wi-Fi, keep them patched, remove unneeded software and document the setup. That makes the questionnaire easier and limits the damage if an office machine gets compromised. Point-to-point encrypted terminals from your processor help a lot too.
How should we store spray records and worker training files?▼
In one organized place with backups and permissions. Records required under the EPA Worker Protection Standard, H-2A program paperwork and phytosanitary documents tend to end up on phones, in email and on one person's laptop. We set up shared storage with folders by record type, role-based access and immutable backups, so they're findable when an inspector or auditor asks. How long to keep each record is for your compliance lead or counsel to confirm; we make sure the storage supports it.
Our sales team works from home in winter. Is that a problem?▼
Not if their laptops are managed. We give remote sales staff managed laptops with endpoint detection, MFA on email and the order system, and secure access to anything that still lives in the office. Availability files shared with brokers move to controlled sharing links rather than open attachments. In the off-season that setup is convenient; in spring it means your sales team can keep working even if the office internet goes down during a storm.
What happens if our order system goes down in April?▼
That's the scenario we plan for first. Before spring, we confirm backups of the order and inventory data are current and immutable, and we run a restore test so you know how long recovery takes. We document a short-term fallback, like exporting the day's pick tickets each morning, so shipping can continue during an outage. If ransomware is involved, our SOC isolates infected machines while we restore from backups, with engineers providing after-hours emergency response for active incidents.
