Lot codes, case labels and sales desks that keep up when the harvest does

Produce Packers & Shippers IT Services

A produce packer has hours, not days, to turn a field's harvest into labeled, cooled, inspected cases on a truck, and every case has to trace back to the right grower lot.

At a glance

That depends on lot receiving, packline label printers, pallet tags, cooler inventory, the sales desk and grower settlement accounting all staying in sync.

We run the IT behind it for packinghouses and grower-shippers in Texas and nationwide: shed PCs and printers, wireless across the dock and coolers, Microsoft 365 for sales, backups and security monitoring.

Our U.S.-based engineers work mostly remotely and send a vetted local technician when a label printer line needs hands on it.

IT that keeps lots traceable, labels printing, loads on time.

From grower lot to pallet tag, the records your buyers, auditors and the FDA expect to see, kept intact.

Packinghouse season

Every case carries a lot code

Produce doesn't wait for your server to reboot. Fruit and vegetables come off the field, through the shed and into the cooler on a clock set by the crop. Your traceability, your buyer audits and your grower settlements all depend on the label data printed along the way. This is how that data gets lost and how we keep it whole.

01 · The pressure

Field to cooler to truck before the crop turns

Bins arrive from the field and get a receiving lot tied to grower, block and harvest date. On the packline, label printers stamp each case with a lot code and pallet tags go on before product enters the cooler. The sales desk is selling those pallets to retailers and wholesalers the same afternoon. If the receiving PC or label system goes down, you either stop the line or pack product you can't trace properly.

  • Receiving lots tied to grower and block
  • Case and pallet labels printed on the line
  • Sales confirmed before the cooler fills

02 · How it breaks

Shed PCs, crew logins and a cloned buyer domain

Packline PCs drive label printers and run under one shared shed login that seasonal crews pass around. The wireless on the dock was put in for scanners years ago and drops out behind the cooler doors. The sales desk trades pricing and freight details by email with buyers and brokers, so a lookalike domain asking to resend payment or redirect a load blends right in. One encrypted settlement database during peak season stalls grower payments for weeks.

  • Shared logins on label-printing PCs
  • Dock wireless that dies near the cooler
  • Spoofed buyer and broker emails

03 · What we change

Packline isolated, records backed up, email hardened

We move packline and receiving PCs onto their own network segment and give crew leads named logins with limited rights. We survey the dock and coolers and add access points built for cold, wet rooms so scanners stay connected. Your packing and settlement software gets immutable backups and a restore test before the season starts. On the sales side, MFA, lookalike-domain filtering and a call-back rule for payment and load changes close the easy fraud paths.

  • Packline PCs segmented with named logins
  • Cooler-rated wireless across the dock
  • Restore tests on packing and settlement data

04 · The after

Trace requests and audits without the scramble

When a retailer asks for the lot history behind a pallet, or a mock recall comes up during a food safety audit, your team pulls records in minutes because the data was never lost or split across spreadsheets. Your food safety manager can show the auditor access controls and backup logs. Growers get settlements on schedule, and the sales desk stops second-guessing every email that mentions money.

  • Lot history ready for buyers and auditors
  • Mock recalls run from intact records
  • Grower settlements paid on schedule

What We Offer

Comprehensive solutions tailored for Houston-area businesses

Packing & Sales Software Support

We support platforms like Famous Software and Silver Creek's Visual Produce: the database, client installs, user permissions and vendor upgrades. Changes get scheduled between crops, and we test the backup first, so an update never takes down lot receiving, sales orders or grower accounting in the middle of a harvest run.

PTI Label & Pallet Tag Printing

Case labels with GTINs, lot codes and voice pick codes have to print right every time. We keep the PCs, label templates and printer connections behind them stable, document a spare setup for each line and get a printer back online fast when a jam turns out to be a driver or network problem instead of hardware.

Cooler & Dock Wireless

Cold rooms, metal racks and wet floors are hard on Wi-Fi. We survey your dock, cooler and staging areas, place access points that handle condensation and temperature swings, and tune them for handheld scanners and tablets so inventory and load-out scans don't vanish when someone walks behind the cooler door.

Traceability Record Protection

For crops on FDA's Food Traceability List, you'll need to keep key data elements for each critical tracking event and produce them on request. We protect where those records live with access controls, immutable backups and retention settings, and we help you confirm you can actually export them when someone asks.

Packline Equipment Boundary

Optical graders, sizers and hydrocooler controls often have their own PCs and vendor remote access. We don't change settings inside that equipment. We isolate it from office email and the internet, put vendor connections behind a controlled gateway you can switch off and coordinate with the OEM when a network change is needed.

Grower Settlement Security

Pool accounting and grower settlements move real money to many growers at once. We lock down who can edit banking details, add MFA to accounting and banking portals, alert on unusual changes and help you write a verification step so a grower's payment can't be redirected by one convincing email.

Why Choose LayerLogix?

Serving businesses throughout the Greater Houston area including Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Atlanta, Nationwide.

Fewer Stopped Packlines

Monitored PCs, documented printer setups and solid dock wireless mean fewer moments where the line waits on IT. When something does fail, we already know your setup and can walk the shed lead through a swap or dispatch help.

Cleaner Food Safety Audits

GFSI and buyer audits increasingly ask how records are protected and recovered. You'll have backup results, access reviews and a device inventory ready, so the IT questions in the audit stop being the ones that make your food safety manager nervous.

Faster Trace-Back Requests

A buyer or regulator asking for lot history wants an answer the same day. Intact, exportable records and practiced mock recalls let you respond with confidence instead of piecing together spreadsheets from three different PCs on the shed floor.

Seasonal Crews Without Lingering Access

Shed crews and sales help change from season to season. We set up named accounts with the least access needed and turn them off when the season wraps, so former workers can't still log in to packing or settlement systems.

Our Process

1
Walk the receiving area, packlines, coolers and sales office, listing every PC, label printer, scanner, access point and vendor connection.
2
Review your packing and settlement software, its database, backups and how traceability data is stored and exported.
3
Segment packline and grader networks from office traffic and replace shared shed logins with named crew-lead accounts.
4
Survey dock and cooler wireless, install cold-rated access points and confirm scanners hold a connection end to end.
5
Run an immutable backup and full restore test of packing, traceability and settlement data before the season starts.
6
Set MFA and payment-change call-backs with sales and accounting, then review accounts and backups as each season closes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which FSMA rule applies to our packinghouse?▼
It depends on how your operation is set up, and that's a question for your food safety consultant or counsel. Packing that happens on a farm generally falls under the Produce Safety Rule, while an off-farm packinghouse is generally a facility under the Preventive Controls rule for human food. The Food Traceability Rule adds recordkeeping for foods on FDA's Food Traceability List either way. We don't decide which applies, but we make sure the systems holding those records are protected and recoverable.
Our case labels keep printing wrong or not at all. Is that an IT problem?▼
Often it is. Label issues that look like printer failures are frequently driver updates, a template change on the PC, a print queue stuck on the server or a flaky network drop to the line. We trace the path from your packing software to the printer, fix the actual cause and document the setup so the next failure is a quick fix. Worn print heads and mechanical faults go to your printer service vendor.
Can you work on our optical grader or sizer?▼
We won't change anything inside the grader or its control software. That belongs with the manufacturer. What we do is protect the boundary: putting the grader's PC on an isolated network, removing direct internet access, managing how the OEM connects for remote support and making sure any data it sends to your packing system travels a controlled path. If the OEM needs a port opened or a firewall rule changed, we handle that side with them.
Our buyers' food safety audits keep asking about IT. What do they want?▼
Usually they want to know that your traceability and food safety records can't be lost or quietly altered. That means named user accounts, backups you've actually tested, a way to restore records after a ransomware attack and some control over who can edit lot data. We put those controls in place and keep the evidence on file: restore test results, access reviews and a current system list. Your food safety manager then has real answers, not promises.
How do we protect grower settlements and pool accounting?▼
Start by limiting who can change grower banking details and require a second person to approve those changes. Add MFA to the accounting system and to every banking portal. We set alerts for unusual edits and logins, and we help you adopt a call-back rule using a phone number already on file, never one from an email. Settlements also need immutable backups, so a ransomware attack doesn't leave you unable to calculate what each grower is owed.
Do you support packers with multiple sheds or a field packing operation?▼
Yes. We connect sheds with managed firewalls and site-to-site VPN, add cellular backup at remote locations and keep every site on the same security standard. Field packing or harvest-side receiving can run on rugged tablets with mobile data, syncing lot records back to the main system. We plan for spots where coverage is thin, so data is queued on the device and uploaded once a connection returns instead of being lost.
