Why is Wi-Fi so hard at a marina?▼
Water reflects signal, metal masts and hulls block it, boats move, and docks stretch far from any building. Salt air and sun also wear out equipment that isn't built for it. Many marinas start with indoor access points zip-tied to pilings, which leaves dead zones and fails within a season or two. We survey the property, place outdoor-rated, corrosion-resistant access points where boats actually sit, and link distant docks with point-to-point radios. Monitoring tells us when a unit is failing so we can replace it before tenants start calling.
Can boater Wi-Fi and our POS share the same network?▼
They shouldn't. If boaters, staff, card terminals and cameras all share one network, any infected guest device can probe your fuel dock POS and office systems. It also makes your PCI DSS scope as large as possible. We separate boater, staff, POS and camera traffic into their own segments with firewall rules between them. Boaters still get fast internet, staff keep their tools and the card terminals sit where guest devices can't reach them, which simplifies your PCI self-assessment too.
How do we prepare our IT for hurricane or flood season?▼
Start by getting records off the property. Slip contracts, insurance certificates, billing data and accounting should live in the cloud or be backed up off-site and tested. Then write a short plan: who shuts down and protects which equipment, how phones forward, how staff log in remotely, and the order for bringing the network back after the storm. We build that plan with you, set up remote access ahead of time and run through it before the season so nobody is figuring it out with a storm already on the way.
Can you support our marina management software?▼
Yes, around the application itself. Your marina management vendor handles software features and bugs; we handle user access, devices, network, integrations with accounting and payments, and an independent backup of your data. When online booking stops working or automatic billing fails, we figure out whether the issue is on your side or the vendor's and open the ticket with them. We also clean up shared logins so each dockmaster and office staff member has their own account, which makes it clear who changed a slip assignment or a rate.
A tenant got an email asking them to pay their slip fee to a new account. What now?▼
Tell the tenant not to pay and to call the office at the number they already know. Then contact us so we can check office and dockmaster mailboxes for compromise, look for hidden forwarding rules and review your domain's email protection. If tenant information may have been exposed, talk to your counsel about notification. Afterward, we add MFA and impersonation protection and help you send tenants a note explaining that you never change payment details by email, so the next fake invoice is easy to spot.
Do you handle our gate access and dock cameras?▼
We handle the network those systems use. Gate access controllers and camera systems usually come from a security integrator who owns their configuration. We give that equipment its own network segment, remove default passwords, update recorder firmware with the integrator, close any direct internet exposure and set up secure remote viewing for managers. When the integrator needs to make a change or connect remotely, we coordinate access so it's logged and limited, and nothing they do affects boater Wi-Fi or card terminals.
Do you provide Marinas IT Services in Houston and nearby areas?▼
Yes. LayerLogix is based in the Greater Houston area and delivers marinas IT services to businesses across Houston and the surrounding communities, including The Woodlands, Spring, Katy, Sugar Land, Conroe, Cypress, and Pearland. For most Houston-area clients we can be on-site the same day when something needs hands-on attention, and our help desk is available during business hours, with after-hours emergency support. Call 713-571-2390 to check coverage for your specific address.
What does Marinas IT Services cost for a Houston business?▼
Pricing depends on your size and what you need, so we do not publish a one-size-fits-all number — but Houston businesses generally pay a flat, predictable monthly fee rather than surprise hourly bills. We start with a free, no-obligation assessment of your current setup, then give you a clear quote in plain English with no hidden costs. That way you know exactly what you are getting and what it costs before you commit.
