IT for merchant and contracted generators bidding, dispatching and settling daily

Independent Power Producers IT Services

An independent power producer makes money in the market every day, so if the desk can't submit offers, a plant can't receive dispatch or a settlement statement disappears into a compromised mailbox, the losses are immediate and hard to claw back.

At a glance

You run a fleet of plants that may span several grid regions, a market operations team working ISO portals and scheduling systems, and asset managers reporting to owners and lenders. Some of your sites carry NERC CIP obligations.

We run corporate and plant-office IT for IPPs, protect market access credentials and settlement data, and secure the boundary to plant controls with your engineers. We support IPPs in Texas and nationwide.

IT that keeps offers going in, dispatch flowing, settlements clean.

Market access that can't be hijacked, plant offices that stay connected, and CIP evidence that's already organized when the auditor writes.

Bid, dispatch, settle

Where an IPP's revenue meets its IT

An IPP is part power plant operator and part trading company. Plants in different regions report to a central team that bids into markets, follows dispatch, manages fuel and reconciles every settlement. That central team depends on certificates, portals and data feeds that most corporate IT never thinks about. When they fail, revenue fails with them.

01 · The pressure

The market closes whether IT works or not

Each morning, the market operations desk pulls forecasts and plant availability, builds offers and submits them through ISO portals and APIs before the deadline. Plant operators receive dispatch instructions and report outages. Fuel managers nominate gas. Settlement analysts download statements and dispute errors within tight windows. Asset managers report performance to owners and lenders. If the desk loses access to a portal or a certificate expires unnoticed, offers miss the window and the fleet earns nothing for that interval, no matter how ready the plants are.

  • Offers submitted before market deadlines
  • Dispatch and outage reports between plants and desk
  • Settlement disputes filed inside narrow windows

02 · How it breaks

Shared certificates and plant offices on their own

ISO access often relies on digital certificates and API credentials that live on one analyst's laptop or get shared across the desk. Plant offices, acquired with the asset, come with their own domain, old firewalls and a local IT contractor nobody has met. Vendor remote tools sit on plant engineering PCs. An attacker who phishes a settlement analyst can quietly alter statements or redirect payments. Meanwhile, CIP evidence for registered sites is scattered across spreadsheets that only one compliance person understands.

  • Market certificates sitting on one laptop
  • Acquired plant offices with inherited IT
  • CIP evidence scattered across spreadsheets

03 · What we change

Managed market access and a fleet standard

We inventory every ISO certificate, API credential and portal account, assign named owners, store them securely and track expiry dates. Plant offices get folded into a single identity system and a standard firewall design, with the business network separated from plant controls in partnership with your engineers. Vendor access moves to one monitored path. For CIP-registered sites, we organize the IT-side evidence, such as access lists, patch records and logs, so your compliance lead can find it fast.

  • A register of certificates with expiry tracking
  • One identity system across every plant office
  • IT-side CIP evidence organized by requirement

04 · The after

A fleet that runs like one company

No one finds out about an expired certificate at bid time anymore. New acquisitions join the fleet standard within weeks instead of keeping their old IT forever. Settlement analysts work on protected accounts with verified payment processes. When a regional entity schedules an audit, your compliance lead pulls IT evidence from one place. Owners, lenders and insurers see a generator that treats cyber risk with the same discipline it applies to plant availability.

  • No surprise certificate expirations at bid time
  • Acquired plants on the fleet standard quickly
  • Audit evidence pulled from one place

What We Offer

Comprehensive solutions tailored for Houston-area businesses

Market Access Credential Management

ISO portals, scheduling systems and market APIs depend on certificates, tokens and accounts with real financial power. We inventory them, assign named owners, store them in managed vaults or hardware where supported, alert well ahead of expiry and remove access when people leave the desk.

Fleet-Wide Plant Office Standard

Plants acquired over time arrive with different networks, domains and local providers. We bring them onto one identity system, a standard firewall and Wi-Fi design and common device management, so support works the same at every site and you always know what's running where, down to the switch in the control building office.

Plant IT/OT Boundary With Your Engineers

Turbine controls, inverters, DCS and plant historians belong to your operations and controls teams and their OEMs. We secure business networks at each plant, design the boundary with your engineers, move historian data through a DMZ and route vendor support through a single monitored path. Control system changes stay with them.

NERC CIP IT-Side Evidence Support

For sites registered with NERC, many CIP requirements touch IT: access management, electronic access points, patching, logging and incident response plans. We support those controls and keep evidence organized by requirement and site, so your compliance lead isn't rebuilding it before every audit. Interpretations stay with your compliance team.

Settlement and Payment Protection

Settlement statements, invoices and payment instructions move between ISOs, counterparties, fuel suppliers and your accounting team. We protect the mailboxes and systems involved with phishing-resistant MFA, impersonation filtering and alerts on unusual rules, and help set call-back verification for any change to payment details, no matter who appears to be asking.

Market Desk Continuity

Bidding can't stop because an office loses power or a laptop dies. We set up backup workstations, secondary connectivity and documented procedures so analysts can submit offers from an alternate location, with certificates and tools already available there. Then we test it before you need it.

Why Choose LayerLogix?

Serving businesses throughout the Greater Houston area including Houston, Dallas, Austin, San Antonio, Atlanta, Nationwide.

Fewer Missed Market Intervals

Tracked certificates, protected accounts and a tested continuity plan mean the desk can submit offers even when something goes wrong. That protects revenue in the hours when prices are high and plant availability matters most.

Faster Integration of Acquisitions

A defined fleet standard gives every newly acquired plant a clear path onto your identity, network and support model. Inherited IT risks get addressed in weeks, and plant staff get consistent help instead of an unknown local contractor.

Calmer CIP Audits

Evidence organized by requirement and site, collected continuously, turns audit preparation into retrieval rather than reconstruction. Your compliance lead spends time on substance instead of chasing screenshots and access lists from each plant in the weeks before an audit.

Protected Revenue and Payments

Settlement data and payment instructions are prime fraud targets. Stronger mailbox protection and verification routines make it much harder for someone to alter statements or redirect funds, and easier for your team to spot a fake request.

Our Process

Frequently Asked Questions

Does NERC CIP apply to all of our plants?▼
Not necessarily. CIP applies to entities registered with NERC, such as generator owners and operators, and the specific requirements depend on how each site's systems are categorized. Many generators fall into the low impact category, which still carries real obligations. Registration and categorization decisions belong with your compliance team and counsel. We help with the IT-side controls and evidence wherever CIP applies, and use similar practices at unregistered sites because insurers ask the same questions.
How do you protect ISO portal certificates?▼
First by knowing they exist. We build a register of every certificate, API key and portal account, who owns it, where it's installed and when it expires. Then we store them in managed vaults or protected certificate stores rather than loose files, limit installation to designated machines and set alerts well ahead of expiry. When someone leaves the desk, the register shows exactly what to revoke and reissue, so no one keeps market access they shouldn't have.
We just bought a plant with its own IT. What do you do first?▼
We start with discovery: accounts, firewalls, remote access tools, local providers and the connections between the plant office and controls. We close the riskiest items right away, like unknown remote tools and default passwords. Then we plan the move onto your identity system and fleet network standard, coordinating with plant management and your controls engineers so operations aren't disrupted. Most of the transition happens remotely, with local help when hands-on work is needed.
Will you change our turbine or inverter controls?▼
No. Turbine, inverter, DCS and plant protection systems belong to your operations staff, controls engineers and OEMs. We work on the business side and the boundary: firewalls, DMZ design for historian data, the vendor remote access path and monitoring. Boundary changes are planned with your engineers and done through your change process. That keeps responsibilities clear and avoids anyone touching equipment outside their qualifications. Plant managers always know whose call a change is.
How do you keep the market desk running if the office goes down?▼
We build for that before it happens. That usually means an alternate site or remote workstations prepared with the tools, certificates and connectivity analysts need, a backup internet path and written procedures for switching over. We test the plan by having analysts actually submit from the alternate setup during a quiet period. The goal is that a power outage, fire alarm or failed laptop becomes an inconvenience rather than a missed market interval.
Can you work alongside our existing plant IT contractors?▼
Yes. Some plants have long-standing local providers who know the site well. We can take over corporate systems and the fleet standard while those providers keep handling local tasks, or bring them into a co-managed arrangement with shared tools and documentation. What matters is that identity, monitoring and boundary design are consistent everywhere. We'll work out a clear split of responsibilities with you and each provider, and write it down so plant staff know who to call.
Do you provide Independent Power Producers IT Services in Houston and nearby areas?▼
Yes. LayerLogix is based in the Greater Houston area and delivers independent power producers IT services to businesses across Houston and the surrounding communities, including The Woodlands, Spring, Katy, Sugar Land, Conroe, Cypress, and Pearland. For most Houston-area clients we can be on-site the same day when something needs hands-on attention, and our help desk is available during business hours, with after-hours emergency support. Call 713-571-2390 to check coverage for your specific address.
What does Independent Power Producers IT Services cost for a Houston business?▼
Pricing depends on your size and what you need, so we do not publish a one-size-fits-all number — but Houston businesses generally pay a flat, predictable monthly fee rather than surprise hourly bills. We start with a free, no-obligation assessment of your current setup, then give you a clear quote in plain English with no hidden costs. That way you know exactly what you are getting and what it costs before you commit.
